The Audi R8 is still a stunning sight out on the roads but excitement is starting to dry-up, with traditionally long waiting lists now just withering to a month or two in most markets. To drum up interest once again, and attract new customers, Audi plans to launch several new versions over the next 12 months, including a new 'Spider Convertible' as well as a high-performance RS variant.
In addition to these, Audi is also expected to add a second engine opti on to the lineup. Joining the current 420hp (313kW) and 317lb-ft (430Nm) 4.2L V8 version will be a new V10 model powered by the naturally-aspirated 5.2L engine found in the S6. According to Car and Driver, the new V10 R8 coupe will make its debut at next month’s Detroit Auto Show. It will be rated at 520hp (388kW) and 398lb-ft (540Nm) of torque.
Both the V8 and V10 variants will be sold alongside each other, however there is a strong chance that the V8 model will eventually be phased out due to the lower demand. Those planning to buy the Spider later in the year will also be able to choose either the V8 or V10 option.
Finally, expected to debut sometime in 2010, will be the high-performance RS variant. It is rumored to pack a 535hp (400kW) twin-turbo V10 engine. The differences between the RS and the standard models extend beyond just horsepower outputs. The chassis has reportedly been modified to accommodate the extra power, expected to be fitted with larger brakes - possibly even carbon-ceramic units. Other differences will be larger air intakes and newly sculpted side blades.
