Porsche 918 Spyder

Unless you have been living Greece, where all you would be doing is crying about how your economy is dead, I am sure that you have heard of the Porsche 918 Spyder.

Firstly, go ahead and watch this video.

Impressive, eh?

Porsche have gone to great lengths with their engineering, wait I'm doing this wrong isn't this what every review starts with?. From now on I will be writing my blogs a little differently so you can actually look at the stuff you want to know about.

Style

For a layman to spot a difference between a 911 and a Boxster would be very difficult, I promise. A person like me, who can tell which car it is from miles away is not able to spot the difference between a 911 Carrera S and a 911 turbo. Basically all you're paying for is performance. Honestly, most Porsche's have never looked good.

A couple Porsche's did stand out and some new ones such as the Boxster Spyder are beautiful and there is a distinct difference between the normal Boxster and the Spyder. However, the 918 Spyder is really a looker!, it could easily be mistaken for a Ferrari or a Lamborghini. Hats off to Porsche for this one. The front is very elegant and non-Porsche-like If I may say so!. It actually looks like the F430 16M from the front. The rear, I see hints of the Audi R8 and the LP560-4, this is not surprising as Audi, Lamborghini and Porsche are owned by Volkswagen so they have plenty of inspiration for looks!. I think style-wise this is quite the break Porsche needed and I am sure this means they are going to change the game, that is, If they apply such clever design to all their line-ups.

Performance

The Porsche 918 Spyder with plug-in hybrid provides the performance of a thoroughbred super sports car (no, seriously) on fuel consumption of just 3 litres/100 kilometres in the New European Driving Cycle, equal to a CO2 emission rating of 70 g/km.

The 918 Spyder is powered by a mid-mounter V8 developing more than 500 bhp at 9,200 rpm as well as electric motors on the front and rear axle with overall mechanical output of 218 bhp (160 kW).

This car does not lack in performance it has achieved a time of less than 7:30 on the Nurburgring, for those who understand this time, yes, it's really really good for a Hybrid supercar.

Not talking about negatives yet, YES, i have spotted a lot. But let's just say its Brilliant!.

Will it work?

Sadly, no. Despite being a successor to the legendary Porsche Carrera GT this will be considered as another concept. The reason being that every person who understands this car will get the point that the car is confused. Let me explain, the system of the Hybrid (electric) engine will work for 25 km at maximum. So, firstly its impractical. Secondly, Tesla would be a better option, being the first ever Hybrid supercar attempt from Porsche means they lack experience in such vehicles. I say Tesla because they are a very reputed brand, at present the only brand that comes to mind when thinking of Hybrid or Electric Supercar. If you have enough money to afford a Porsche 918 Spyder, then the opportunity cost is very high as you could buy a lot of cars which look better and have greater performance, however greater environmental impact. Thirdly, and finally, electric hybrids are not accepted world-wide; for such a technology to be accepted it will take years and years, having an electric charging meter on every street has its costs and many developing countries would not even consider it, so really it's just the Europe and USA which will ever be entitled to such technology and cars.

Hi guys,
Firstly, I am sorry for leaving the blog in the mess it was but I had no choice, choosing between blogging and IB (International Baccalaureate) was a tough one but I had to give it to IB since, well frankly it was going to get me into university so might as well :). Secondly, the site is now only on blogspot as www.ultimateturbo.com has expired but I will renew it in a couple of days. Thirdly, I am going to blog at least once everyday as of 13th June 2010 as I have regained passion for cars, well not that it was lost or anything, but as I mentioned I have had no time at all for this blog but now its going to come back to life! XD.

Video: Paolo Pinifarina on Ferrari 458 Italia's Form & Function

Form versus function - it's a classic debate, and one with strong arguments on both sides. As much as sports cars are tools for going fast, they are dynamic works of art as well. In the case of the Ferrari 458 Italia, it is both, and in this video Pininfarina president Paolo Pininfarina explains why.

Along with the glut of new information and interior shots released this morning, Ferrari has also released a new video of the 458 Italia, explaining how the car's elegant styling and close attention to detail also perform real aerodynamic functions.

Though we'll take any excuse to get more close-up looks at a well-executed Italian supercar, it's also an object lesson that form and function aren't always mutually exclusive.

Check out the video to see for yourself, and pay attention around the 1:00 minute mark to see how F1 technology may have trickled down to the front wing/intake area, allowing the aerodynamic surfaces to deform under load to increase the angle of attack and improve downforce.

Rendered: 2011 Ferrari 458 Italia Spider

In just a few weeks Ferrari will show to the world for the first time its stunning new 2010 458 Italia supercar, which is set to replace the outgoing F430 at the end of the year. Like the F430, which also came in a Spider convertible version, Ferrari will eventually launch a new open-top version of its latest, which has been previewed here in this latest computer generated rendering.

Likely to be called the 458 Italia Spider, the new model is expected to be launched one year after the hard-top, which pegs its release for sometime late next year as a 2011 model. While Ferrari has a adopted a folding hard-top roof for its most recent convertible model, the California, the 458 Italia Spider is likely to retain the lightweight soft-top roof seen on the F430 Spider and high-performance Scuderia 16M.

Apart from the roof and some chassis reinforcements, the 458 Italia Spider should be identical to its hard-top sibling, which means power will come from a 4.5-liter V-8 engine rated at 570 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque and sending torque to the rear wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Dimensions should remain at 4,527 mm in length, 1,937 mm in width, and 1,213 mm in height, though weight will almost certainly be higher than the hard-top's 1,380 kg measurement.

2011 McLaren ‘P11’ Supercar

When the McLaren F1 first hit the streets it almost immediately catapulted to the top of the performance car scene, taking home the title of world’s fastest production car in 1998 and holding it up until 2005. Building a car better than the original F1 was always going to be a difficult challenge, and perhaps that is why for its successor McLaren isn’t setting its sights too high.

While the original F1 competed with the best supercars of its time - cars like the Ferrari F40, Jaguar XK220, and Porsche 959 - its successor will be competing with more ‘entry-level’ models. Rather than chasing Enzos and Veyrons, the McLaren F1 successor will go up against cars like the Ferrari F430 and Lamborghini Gallardo, and as such it will be priced accordingly.

Prototypes for the new model, which is currently going by its ‘P11’ project name, have been spotted testing recently near McLaren's factory in Surrey, UK, as well as at Germany’s Nurburgring for the first time. Spy shots of the prototypes reveal that the new P11 will feature a much more chiseled appearance that its McLaren F1 predecessor. Though heavily masked, the prototypes also reveal a mid-engine layout, a tall, squared-off tail, short overhangs, and tapered back headlights. The car will also sport a pair of vertically-lifting scissor doors.

Expect an advanced carbon-composite chassis, a lightning quick F1-style paddle shift gearbox and carbon-ceramic brakes. While Mercedes’ partnership with McLaren will soon come to end, the German automaker is tipped to be supplying its 6.2-liter AMG V-8 engine for application in the P11. McLaren engineers, however, are expected to work over the engine to the tune of 550 horsepower.

With an estimated kerb weight of about 1,250kg, the new P11 should easily accelerate from 0-62 mph in less than four seconds and reach a top speed in excess of 200 mph. First deliveries are expected to start in late 2010, and in the following years a Spider convertible and high-performance GTR version could eventually be launched.

First Bentley Mulsanne sells for $550,000 at auction

Getting your hands on any Bentley is generally a sign that things have gone well for you, but for one lucky buyer at the recent Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, things are going swimmingly. That's because the person - whose identity is being held secret - has taken home the Chassis Number One 2011 Bentley Mulsanne.

That's the very first Mulsanne built, and it went for a price of $550,000 according to Gooding & Company, the auction house that sold the car. There are no plans to release the identity of the buyer, though it will be rather difficult to slip out in public with the Mulsanne while staying under the radar.

The new Mulsanne was sold alongside cars that dwarfed its price, however, including a 1962 Ferrari 250GT SWB California Spider that brought in a tremendous $5.115 million, a 1933 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Drop Head Coupe that sold for $4,180,000, and numerous others that sold for prices between $1 and $3 million, including a 1953 Aston Martin DB 2/4 Drop Head Coupe.

Gumpert Apollo Sport Posts 7m 11.57s Nurburgring Lap Time

German automaker and motorsports company Gumpert Sportwagenmanufaktur (yes, that’s how you spell it) manufactures some of the most extreme vehicles on the planet and has recently proven the merits of this claim with a new Nurburgring lap time for its supercar. The Sport is a mid-tier option for the company’s Apollo line of supercar models and for the run the car was optioned with a 700 horsepower version of its regular Audi-sourced 4.2-liter V-8.

The time set by the Apollo Sport is an independent recording noted by German magazine Sport-Auto and comes in at 7m 11.57s. Gumpert is claiming the 'road car' record for the ‘Ring but it’s well known that the Radical SR8 in road legal trim has clocked a blistering 6m 55s lap time.

The Apollo Sport was piloted by 26 year-old driver Florian Gruber on August 13, edging out the Donkervoort D8 RS06, which posted a time of 7m 14.89s back in November 2005, as well as the more recent Nissan GT-R and Corvette ZR1.

As for the car itself, the Apollo Sport comes with a tubular space frame of chrome-molybdenum steel with an integrated safety monocoque structure fabricated in carbon-fiber. The huge air intakes on the roof and side panels feed cold air to the twin-turbo mid-engine powerplant.

The Sport edition is differentiated to the standard Apollo thanks to the addition of a full racing aero package with a huge GT wing and lower front spoilers, while the interior gets comfort mod-cons not usually found in such vehicles. The list includes Alcantara trim, air-conditioning, a CD player and sat-nav, and even a reversing camera as standard. The list price for the Apollo Sport is €299,500 ($423,167) plus taxes.

Bugatti Will Display Concept In September, But It's Not Bordeaux

This year is an important one for Bugatti. Not only does 2009 represent the centenary of the legendary marque but in September Bugatti’s management will reveal the future plans of the company, which will include the announcement of a brand new model. Why September? Because that is the month in which the company was founded back in 1909 by Ettore Bugatti. After two teaser images were revealed last month, hinting at a possible Bugatti super-sedan or even a new 'super-Veyron' and then news that the Bordeaux wouldn't be making a Frankfurt debut, the latest news may come as a surprise.

According to Bugatti chief Franz-Josef Paefgen, speaking with Autocar, there will be a concept on display this September - though probably not at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show - but it won't be the Bordeaux. It will, however, be one of three proposed designs for the next-gen Bugatti. This latest news mates well with what Bugatti officials told TheCarConnection in July, which is that the prototype/concept car that is currently being teased is in fact a design model being shown to clients and dealers.

A private showing at Bugatti's centennial celebration in Molsheim, France just ahead of the Frankfurt show is likely to generate some more photography of the design proposal, though whatever Bugatti decides to do with the car's eventual styling, it won't likely see production until 2011 or 2012.

The teaser image above is a digitally-manipulated composite sourced from Pistonheads, and like the original, it's a grainy, dim view of the new car's broad haunches, innovative rear lighting scheme and octuple tail pipes. Yes, you read that right, eight of them.

According to AutoExpress, the new model will be a four-seater supercar titled the Bordeaux, though other sources peg the name as 'Royale'. The vehicle will reportedly feature a shooting-brake style body and come powered by the Veyron’s quad-turbo 8.0L W16 engine, but mounted up front. The engine should maintain is 1,001hp and 1,250Nm rating, which means the new Bordeaux is likely to be the fastest four-seater in the world.

As part of its centenary celebrations, Bugatti will also be releasing its new special edition Bleu Centenaire Veyron, which was revealed for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. While the Bleu Centenaire was not the much anticipated super-Veyron that was on everybody’s lips, Paefgen revealed in March to AutoTelegraaf that there are several projects in the works. Paefgen also ruled out the possibility of a cheaper model than the Veyron, explaining that Bugatti’s next car will be every bit as extreme and just as exclusive.

As for the introduction of the rumored super-Veyron, Paefgen said if anyone tries to build a car that can dethrone the Veyron then Bugatti will be prepared. The American-built SSC Ultimate Aero TT currently holds the title for the world's fastest production car (something that Bugatti has never attempted to attain with the Veyron) but the Veyron is arguably the better technical achievement due to its dual-clutch gearbox and ease of driving.

Paefgen also confirmed that there will be more special editions based on both the Veyron and the open-top Grand Sport.

In the meantime, Bugatti has its hands full filling current order lists. The company only has 50 spots left for the Veyron, of which the total build will be 300 units. The Grand Sport model, which is limited to just 150 models, has already received several dozen orders.

2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS Breaks Cover

Following the release of the facelifted Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera 4 models late last year, as well as the new Targa and GT3, and then just earlier this month the new 911 Turbo, comes the first details and images for the updated 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Porsche has continued its tradition of only implementing minimal changes to the styling of its race-bred GT3 RS, opting to focus on changes taking place under the revised sheet metal instead.

Described as the ““the most sporting 911 yet”, the new 2010 Porsche 911 GT3 RS comes into the world with the same 3.8-liter naturally aspirated flat six as the regular GT3 but with a healthier 444 horsepower – 35 horsepower up on the outgoing model.

The high-revving engine has a specific output of more than 113 horsepower per liter and comes mated to a low-ratio, short-shift six-speed manual gearbox.

Some of the other important changes for the new GT3 RS includes a wider track, both front and rear, as well as an oversized carbon-fiber GT wing with exposed aluminum supports. To reduce even further than the already lithe 2009 model, Porsche engineers have fitted a lithium-ion battery, resulting in a 10kg weight saving.

Porsche is yet to reveal full details for its latest addition so stay tuned for an update.

Can we still afford a good car during the recession?

Oh NO! the recession is upon us, wait does that mean we cannot buy new cars anymore?

Of course we can!. If you are one of those people whose wallets have been drained by the recession and now you think you cannot afford a new car, fear not as this post might just help you.

Of course cars like in the posts below, Rolls Royce, Bentley's, Ferrari's and other super car companies they are out of the question, forget the average person even some rich dogs cannot afford these at the moment.

It all depends on what kind of car you would like to buy, a coupe, convertible, sedan, 2 seater, 4 seater, 6 or 7 seater. Some of you might want new cars but your wallets won't agree, that is fine because i feel that you can get better second hand cars than newer first hand cars, for e.g. last week i saw a 2008 Volkswagen Golf for less that $10,000 USD which is extremely cheap especially when i tell you this, get ready it had 10 miles on it, but it was second hand. Therefore never give up searching for second hand car, as you never know what you might find. After you have decided whether you want a second hand car or a new one and ofbcouse the type, which i have mentioned before;here's what to do:

1) If you are brand loyal or you prefer some company as you have been an owner of previously then there is not a problem. You can ring up the company and ask them for any special deals, if you go directly to the showroom, it won't help. Hyundai and Ford are best known for special deals, they will not entertain you on the topic of special deals, as showroom are not made for special deals as at the factory they only have about 10 cars per month that go on special offers as they have been in stock for a while.

2) For some of you insurance will be a major issue, especially if you have a second hand car, especially if you are lucky enough to find a Jaguar or some similar type of 'Luxury car'. If so you do not always have to speak the truth on the phone with the agent, a friend of mine got off by saying that he was a full time blogger and hardly went out of the house. Which got him $5000 USD off the price of the insurance, these small things help a lot.

3) My advice: Look for GM make cars, as we know they have been deeply affected by the recession. Therefore they are currently selling their cars for 1/4 of their original price here is a list of cars and their price range:

$1000- $5000 USD = Subaru R1, Hyundai Atos, Smart Car
$5000- $15,000 USD = Ford Focus, Golf GTI, Nissan TIDA, Toyota Corolla
You can get a lot of cars but these are what i remember being the cheapest.

From Pebble Beach: 2010 Bentley Mulsanne

With the all-new 2011 Bentley Mulsanne, there's reason to believe that Bentley has a little grudge against its former sibling Rolls-Royce.

The new Mulsanne had its world debut at the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours, and Bentley makes no veiled references to challenging Rolls-Royce's Phantom with the new sedan. The're saying it outright, calling the Mulsanne the "pinnacle" of luxury cars.

With the Mulsanne, Bentley's designed its first all-new car since the 1930s. (The Continental range shares some minor pieces with other Volkswagen Group products.) Most technical details are being withheld for a 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show appearance, but Bentley does say the new 6.75-liter V-8 in the Mulsanne is a complete redesign of the existing engine.

The design's a blend of a traditional silhouette with some modern detailing, less so than the smaller Continental range. Some similarities exist in the treatment of the front fenders, but the Mulsanne's grille and D-pillar are more tailored to the Phantom and Maybach crowd.

Named for the 90-degree turn at Le Mans, the Mulsanne arrives in mid-2010 with a pricetag likely approaching $300,000, before any custom finishes or materials are specified. Bentley promises the new sedan's wood, leather and brightware will be among the industry's finest.

2012 BMW 3 Series Touring

The current E90 BMW 3-Series has been on the market since 2005, so it's only fitting that details about the next-gen model are beginning to circulate. Most agree that the next model will feature styling lifted, at least in part, from the Concept CS, though also expect to see a healthy dose of the new corporate styling debuted on the latest 7-Series.

Due in 2012, the next BMW 3-series will pay special attention to efficiency and it will achieve that goal through extensive use of the automaker’s EfficientDynamics technology. Low drag aerodynamics, smaller engines, and high-tech electronics will combine to make the next 3-Series a step above the current car.

Aesthetically, designers will attempt to address criticisms of the current car's awkward styling and lack of interior space. The bonnet will likely sit much higher than on the current model to improve pedestrian safety, while the sides will be marked with a prominent character line and high beltline. Proportions will remain much the same as the current model but weight will be reduced thanks to the increased use of aluminum and other advanced materials in its construction. This computer generated rendering of the Touring wagon variant provides a glimpse as to what the new model will likely look like.

A huge change for the 2012 car could be the addition of three-cylinder engines to the lineup. Though these wouldn't likely be seen in the U.S. during the first half of the next 3-Series’ model life, they could eventually make their way across the pond if fuel efficiency and emissions regulations continue to tighten past 2016.

With a single turbo and 1.5-liters of displacement - effectively half of the current twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine - the cars would be good for anywhere from 150 to 170 horsepower and between 150 and 220 pound-feet of torque, with the gasoline models weighing in lower on the torque scale than the diesel models. Paired with an ultra-efficient 8-speed transmission and more efficient auxiliary systems such as heating and cooling, the next-gen 3-Series is expected to deliver some seriously impressive economy.

One of the new advanced EfficientDynamics technologies to make its way into the next 3-Series will be a so-called 'air curtain'. Using a special series of ducts and vents, the system directs air in a manner such that it slips neatly over the wheels, which are normally an area of high turbulence, and therefore energy-sapping drag.

In addition to making the car more efficient overall, BMW is looking to make the next 3-Series less expensive to build and therefore to buy as it aims for larger volumes. Whether that will mean compromises in terms of total feature set or simply a lower-end range of models to entice entry-level luxury buyers is not clear, but pushing the 3-Series so far down-market could step on the toes of the 1-Series range and any future city cars coming from the Project i initiative.

Finally, as yet another measure to enhance efficiency while still delivering a BMW driving experience, expect to see the hybrid technology debuting on the X6 and 7-series to eventually make its way to the 3-Series, albeit in somewhat reduced form. This technology will likely be especially targeted at U.S. buyers, since even by the car's mid-cycle revamp in 2016, there isn't likely to be widespread adoption of diesel-engined cars.

Of course, all of these details are still speculative at this point, but it's clear that BMW is pushing its mainstream offerings in a more efficient direction while still trying to maintain their engaging, driver-focused character. It is a difficult balancing act, but one that enthusiasts will enjoy seeing played out over the years to come.

Leaked Video of Rolls Royce's newest, Ghost

Rolls-Royce is currently developing a brand new model positioned below the Phantom for launch in the second quarter of next year. The new model is the 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost sedan, which is expected to double the number of vehicles built by the ultra-luxury automaker each year and is revealed for the first time in full production trim thanks to this leaked official promo video.

In the short clip, Rolls-Royce product manager Dan Balmer takes us through a short ride in the upcoming model, giving us a clear look at the car ahead of its expected Frankfurt Auto Show debut. While its official reveal is still over a month away, we already have plenty of details on the new car.

I know that it will come with a 6.6-liter turbocharged V-12 engine matched to a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox. Output at the crankshaft will be rated at 563 horsepower and 575 pound-feet of torque, which makes the Ghost more powerful than the Phantom despite being positioned below it. This will be enough to accelerate it from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds and see it easily reach its electronically governed top speed of 155 mph.

In keeping with its ‘entry-level’ positioning, the Ghost will be smaller all around when compared to the Phantom. While the Phantom's dimensions stretch to around 5,834 mm, the Ghost will measure in at 5,399 mm in length, 1,948 mm across, and stand 1,550 mm in height. Its wheelbase will stretch 3,295 mm and inside there will be generous seating for five adults.

Rolls-Royce has also revealed that the car will make use of the very latest developments in chassis engineering, including a new four corner air suspension system matched to multi-link aluminum front and rear axle geometry. A new chassis management system will also be fitted and is designed to control the car’s anti-roll stabilization and the suspension stiffness to ensure the best possible comfort for occupants.

The new air suspension system is so sensitive that it can detect even the smallest of changes. For example, the movement of a single rear passenger from one side of the seat to the other can be detected and system modified to compensate. The on-board computer system reads multiple inputs from sensors around the car - the dampers alone making individual load calculations every 2.5 milliseconds. The air suspension system also incorporates a lift and kneel function, raising or lowering the car by 25mm for those steep driveways.

Customer deliveries of Ghost in Europe will begin late in 2009 with pricing from £165,000 (approximately $271,106) excluding taxes and delivery charges. Customer deliveries in other markets including the U.S. and Asia Pacific region will begin from the second quarter 2010.

Next-gen C7 Corvette Coming In 2012

Rumors of the next Chevrolet Corvette, the C7 generation, have been circulating the web since the debut of the C6. But yesterday's General Motors new-model extravaganza in Detroit brought with it reports that the next-gen Vette will indeed be on the market by 2012.

Earlier word out of GM had put the C7 Corvette on indefinite hold pending the company's rough financial state and uncertain CAFE regulations as of late 2008. With both of those issues now resolved, the green light has been given, according to a report from Corvette Blogger.

The report only gives a production start date of April 2012 for sale as a 2013 model. That's an improvement over the indefinite hold status, and the estimated 2014 debut that was proposed before that, but it's actually just a return to the original pre-market-crash plan.

Despite the production confirmation, few details on the car itself are known. That leaves the board open for speculation, of which there has been no shortage.

One thing that's not on the table, however, is a rumored switch to a mid-engine layout. The C7 will stay front-engine just like it's been for 57 years, according to the report. Like the current car, the C7 will also make extensive use of materials like carbon fiber, aluminum and magnesium to help cut weight while retaining rigidity.

In terms of exterior appearance, it's likely that the Corvette Stingray Concept (pictured) shown at the Chicago Auto Show is a likely indicator of the styling directions being investigated behind the closed doors of the GM Design Studio. Don't expect a carbon copy, but do expect thematic elements, like the gills at the grille area and the fin-like structures at the rear, to make an impression on the final product.

On the rumor side of things, a smaller, forced induction engine - most likely a supercharger, like the one found on the CTS-V's LSA, not the ZR1's 638-horsepower LS9 - is possible to help the car meet fuel economy targets. A dual-clutch gearbox has also been talked about, and would be the next logical step in keeping pace with the likes of Porsche's 911 and Nissan's GT-R.

Like the C6, which was an iterative development of the C5 before it, the C7 will likely be an incremental improvement and redesign of the already proven and fantastic Corvette platform. Don't expect anything radical, but do expect a seriously impressive performance package. The one caveat will be keeping an eye on price as more high-tech elements, materials and machinery get added to the car.

Expect to see more of the car in the coming year or two as Corvette engineers begin to roll out test mules and prototypes, and you can be sure I will be there to bring the latest all along the way.

2011 BMW 5-Series Touring

With the 2009 Audi A6 facelift now on sale and the 2010 Mercedes Benz E-Class just arriving in showrooms all around the globe, attention now turns to the next-generation BMW 5-Series. A class leader since its inception, the 5-Series Sedan and Touring wagon remain crucial vehicles in BMW’s lineup and with the next-gen versions now just months away speculation about the final design has been heating up.

The new 5-Series Sedan is set to arrive in late 2009 for the 2010 model year and heavily disguised prototypes have already been seen testing around the streets of Munich. The most recent shots gave us a look at the Touring model, which is expected to arrive roughly 12 months after the launch of the Sedan as a 2011 model. While heavily camouflaged, this latest computer generated rendering gives us a clear indication as to what to expect for the new executive wagon.

Most of the planned changes are skin-deep. Under the new sheet metal, BMW will continue with its new found love of turbocharging. The new 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 from the X6 is expected to appear in a range topping model, while more turbo-diesel variants are expected to join the lineup as well. BMW is currently developing its second generation common rail system for its diesel powerplants, which will operate at greater pressure for improved performance. The transmission systems will include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed Steptronic semi-auto gearbox, however a new 8-speed unit from ZF is also expected to be available.

Performance will also be improved thanks to the extensive use of lightweight materials including carbon-fiber and aluminum. The car’s construction will be a hybrid of an aluminum spaceframe for the front section, and a traditional steel monocoque for the passenger compartment and rear. This will ensure a favorable front-to-rear weight distribution and improved handling. Up front will be an independent suspension with MacPherson struts, with a multi-link layout for the rear. High-performance models will include carbon-fiber body panels to shed even more weight.

Spy shots: Ferrari F450 test-mule sporting new features

The first examples of Ferrari’s latest model, the California convertible, are still arriving in showrooms around the world but already development on several all-new models is well underway. Late last year we saw images of a shortened 599 testing in Germany, suggesting that Ferrari may be working a new compact front-engined model, and soon after that we saw spy shots for the replacement of the F430.

The images depicted a test mule for the next-generation F430 hidden under the body of the current model. A sticker located at the side of one of the windows showed the internal codename ‘F142’ but the actual name of the car is more likely to be based on the size of the engine just like the current F430. New reports suggest the supercar will be fitted with a 4.5L V8 engine and labeled the F450. Furthermore, Auto Motor und Sport is reporting that a concept version will be unveiled at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show ahead of a sales launch in early 2010.

The report also claims the car will be positioned above the current F430’s placing, possibly to allow for the introduction of the aforementioned compact front-engined model. Expect between 550hp (410kW) and 585hp (436kW), a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, and possibly a brake energy recovery system.

Some details we can gather from the spy shots include bigger air intakes at the sides of the car, a new centrally mounted exhaust system and a slightly longer wheelbase. The new shots also confirm a wider track both at the front and rear axles as well as an additional pair of intakes located behind the rear window. Revealed for the first time on this yellow test-mule is a completely new diffuser design, which shows a more fluid look than previous versions.

While the styling of the new F450 is expected to remain similar to the current F430, the car’s mechanicals could be very different. Ferrari has confirmed that it’s looking at a range of powertrain advancements including hybrid and turbocharging technologies, as well as the introduction of lighter construction methods and active aerodynamics.

GTR VS ZR1 Who win$ according to me!

Well its simple the ZR1 beat the GTR in a half mile drag race and also on the Nurbugring. Well here is the proof, being probably the biggest fan of the GTR i finally accept defeat. But that does'nt mean that the GTR is crap !! no no no! its still the coolest car on the planet and i believe that the 2010 V Spec has beaten the ZR1. That shows if GTR costed as much as a ZR1 it would be a ton and a bit of complete OWNAGE. But for now i would like to show you this. I am not biased ;)

Spy shots: Facelifted Porsche 911 GT3 RS up close

Porsche’s current iteration of the 911 has been around for almost four years and is currently in the process of a mid-cycle update. We’ve already seen the introduction of the facelifted Carrera and Carrera S, AWD 4 and 4S models, as well as the GT3, but still in the works are the more extreme Turbo, and GT2, plus the track-honed GT3 RS – the latter captured here in these latest spy shots.

It will be hard to spot the difference between the new and the old as the images reveal. This is because most of the planned changes will be taking place under the sheet-metal.

Power levels should receive the same 435hp (320kW) boost as the new 3.8L GT3. In line with the changes in the facelifted Carrera range, the engine in the updated GT3 RS will also sport bigger combustion chambers, a new crankshaft, an upgraded oil and water pump, and possibly direct-injection technology as well.

Acceleration times over the current model would likely be improved if Porsche adds its new Doppelkupplung dual-clutch system, but a conventional six-speed manual is likely to remain the only option given the intended purpose of the track special.

The GT3 RS will also once again based on the Carrera 4 body and should feature the same widened track, carbon-fiber interior and plastic rear window as the current model. Styling updates include new LED daytime running lights, revised taillights, a cleaner front end with larger intakes in the lower skirt, and a new lip spoiler. Expect to see the new model make its debut at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

All 49 FIA GT cars take to the track

The 2009 season of the FIA GT Championship got underway with the official media launch and test days, which took place at the Paul Ricard HTTT circuit earlier this week. Cars from the FIA GT Championship, the FIA GT3 European Championship and the GT4 European Cup were entered for the test days, with a total of 49 cars taking part over the two day event. Two special cars, built according to the 2010 GT1 technical regulations, were also included in the event. They were the Nissan GT-R and the Ford GT1.

A number of changes to the motorsport series will be taking place for 2009, including a calendar reduced to eight events, the removal of development tires, and less team assistance. The FIA also announced plans for the GT1 World project.

The 2010 GT1 World project aims to set up a World Championship title for independent teams, with 12 events in 12 countries, on five continents. Letters of intent have been received from circuits in Argentina, Australia, Great Britain, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Romania, Russia, Bulgaria, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. The single GT1 class would consist of six brands, a maximum of 24 cars, two cars per team and two teams per brand.

Hans Reiter, from Reiter Engineering, also confirmed at the event that he would be building a new generation GT1 car : “As some of you may know, Lamborghini has recently released a new version of the Murcielago, SV version, 670hp, 6.7L, and this will be our car for the GT1 World Championship. Unfortunately, the car is not ready yet as the car was only launched in March, but should be ready for the second part of the season,” he explained.

Sony’s PSP Controlled Remote Car

The proposed system has the car, which is moved via a wireless link to a PSP system, capture the environment with a mounted camera. Visual data from the car’s camera is beamed back to the PSP so the user can navigate around obstacles or record and save a movie. The patent specifically says, “a user may control the car 200 so as to spy on their friends… then upload the stored video images to a website.”

A patent filed by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe details an invention where the PSP could be used to operate a remote car with a camera.

Here is a rough look at the car’s schematics. What you can’t see is Sony plans to give the car a speaker and/or microphone. The speaker can be used to play music or reproduce the sound of a particular car like a Ferrari or with editing, perhaps, the Mach 5. Sound effects like engine noises may be preloaded in the car’s memory.

The car can also be used for a racing game within “augmented reality zones”. These are explained as areas with virtual markers and paths that players physically create. Think of it as a build your own race track video game. When you’re inside an augmented reality zone the car moves. Leave the zone and the car freezes so you don’t drive it down a staircase, for example. The patent proposes the augmented reality areas may show the real environment or replace objects with computer generated images. In other words the car can take your sofa and translate it into say, an alien mother ship.

Since this is a patent the PSP remote car system is theoretical. As a new idea there is potential if Sony uses it for more than a spy car. How about Gran Turismo Mobile Camera Car?

Rolling off the factory floor with 272hp (203kW) from its 2.0L TFSI engine, the small and svelte TTS offers impressive performance from day one. But the Germans at mcchip wanted more, so they applied a quick ECU tune to get another 43hp (32kW) and 66lb-ft (90Nm) out of the four-banger, bringing totals to 315hp (235kW) and 325lb-ft (440Nm) of torque. Top speed rises to 171mph (275km/h) as part of the package as well.

Pricing is fairly reasonable as well, at €849 ($1,115) for the tune and another €2,990 ($3,930) for the wheel and tire setup.

Nissan GTR 0-60mph in 2.8 seconds! tuned by Hennessey

The top-speed figure was set at the Texas Mile using a Hennessey Performance Nissan GT-R GTR700. It's not surprising considering the brutal 700hp (522kW) and 630lb-ft (853Nm) output of the upgraded Godzilla, and it's within 4mph of the car's maximum speed possible on stock gearing, which maxes out at 197mph at redline in top gear.

Getting to that top speed is a brutal experience, pulling 1g in acceleration to get to 60mph in 2.8 seconds, 100mph in 6.7 seconds, and 186mph in 24.79 seconds - well under half of the 53.3 seconds the stock GT-R requires to hit that speed. MTM’s new Audi R8 leaves onlookers green with envy

Audi’s R8 already delivers stunning performance in standard guise, coming close to rivalling the cars from Ferrari and Lamborghini, but with a little help from Germany’s Motoren Technik Mayer (MTM) there would be no stopping it. The tuner’s latest program for the R8 is without doubt highlighted by its “Porsche 2D8” green paint scheme – the same as the 911 GT3 RS.

Showing MTM’s attention for detail, on all four black brake calipers and on the black fuel cap there is a green “R8” nameplate. The ultra-light MTM Bimoto light alloy wheels measuring in at 20in also features a green nameplate stating “MTM forged” on one of the spokes.

In the interior, the same color repeats at the seams of a suede steering wheel and the “Quattro” nameplate on the glove department flap. Also, the “R8” logo on the gear-shift shines in green.

Thankfully, MTM hasn’t left the mechanicals untouched. A new supercharger kit for the R8’s 4.2L V8 engine that boosts output to 560hp (418kW) and 427lb-ft (580Nm) of torque is available, but owners of the new V10 model haven’t been left in the dark. MTM also offers an ECU upgrade for the 5.2L FSI engine, which lifts output to 560 hp (418 kW) as well.

Other modifications include a new exhaust system with valve control that leads into four black ceramic-coated end pipes. Re-engineered side-blades that direct the airflow from behind the doors right into the middle engine provide the necessary air supply.

In order to transfer the newly gained power on the road, an extensive aerodynamics package renders the necessary downthrust. At the front, a new splitter made of carbon-fiber, which is painted green on the top and matt black on the bottom, thrusts the R8 on the tarmac. The side skirts and the rear diffuser, both also entirely made of green varnished carbon-fiber, hold the rear axle of the car to the ground. Finally, to protect the car from road bumps or garage exits, MTM added its Lift-up-System, which can raise the car a full 40mm.

Yes guys its here, NYAS, the event that nearly every car enthusiast looks forward to. The highlight this year is the new Bentley Super Sport, which is apparently "GREEN" well thats what they say. I mean they're not fooling anyone, especially when theres a W12, yes thats right a W12 that is 2 V6's combined for those of you who didnt know(just like the Veyron which is W16 which means 2 V8's madness that is !). The Super Sport is going to the be sportiest Bentley to date and its a looker. A Bentley coupe is always gonna be a looker, all yours for $273,000!. Well it was never going to be cheap was it?. The engine is capable of running on normal unleaded and E85 biofuel or any combination of the two fuel-sources. 0 to 62 mph for the Bentley Continental Supersports comes in 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 204 mph. Offset by gloss black wheels, the arctic white duco on this bad boy is just begging to have a gaggle of smokin’ hot, Fifth Avenue gold diggers bent over the hood ornament. Fuck HSV’s, I just want one of these!

On the other hand GM had less that 10 people visit their stall's RECESSION to the MAXX!!!!. Poor GM, they were probably expecting this. Keeping the topic of 'Sports Cars' alive, BMW showed off the new 'M' upgrade for their part SUV/ part Coupe(which they like to call SUV coupe) the X6, the upgrade includes s new body kit, the V8 gets a boost, so now it produces 575 BHP and 600 Nm Torque.

Nissan showed off its new 370Z convertible, the real sports car as they say. The Z is definately a very beautiful car and smaller than you might think it is, its gets the same V6 375 bhp as the 350Z but this one is lighter so it will probably make better use of the amazing Nissan engine. Anyways thats all i have from the first 2 days of the Auto Show guys.

Top Gear's Stig revealed as former NASCAR driver

The BBC's Top Gear is perhaps the most well-recognized and widely-watched motoring program on earth, and the series' dependence on a hired gun that plies the world's best supercars at the show's test track is equally well-known. That driver's identity has been a closely guarded secret of the show, however - until today.

According to the latest reports from the UK's The Daily Telegraph, the secretive 'tame racing driver' that dresses in a white racing suit and helmet for the BBC's Top Gear television program has been outed as racing driver and Bristol, UK resident, Ben Collins.

Collins has previously denied being The Stig, though his name has come up on several occasions in association with the character. Rumors of a clause in The Stig's contract that requires immediate termination from the Top Gear show upon exposure of his true identity could explain the public denials, however.

According to the reports Collins' identity as The Stig has been an 'open secret' for some time now, and was finally broken to the public thanks to the newspaper's decision to part from the honor-code that had kept the identity secret.

A previous Stig, now known as the Black Stig, preceded the new, white-clad version, but was killed of from the show upon the revelation of his identity as former British Formula 1 driver Perry McCarthy. It's not yet known if the current Stig will now face a similar fate, or what sort of Stig might replace him.

Rival for the new X1 SUV?? maybe... The Audi Q1 crossover

Audi has hinted at launching a new Q3 compact crossover positioned below the Q5 ever since the debut of 2007’s Cross Coupe quattro concept. However, an even smaller soft-roader is expected to be launched to help Audi reach its goal of delivering 40 different models by 2015. The new entry-level soft-roader is likely to be called the Q1 and latest reports claim it won’t come onto the market until late 2012 at the earliest.

Rising fuel prices are causing buyers of large SUVs to downsize to smaller and more fuel efficient vehicles, but many don’t want to give up some of the unique characteristics of their SUVs – namely, the taller ride height and line of sight. Carmakers are predicting strong growth in the compact SUV segment and are racing to develop a new generation of tiny soft-roaders. Audi’s parent company, Volkswagen, is expected to launch a new SUV version of its next-generation Polo and BMW is currently testing prototypes for its new X1.

The new Q1 is expected to be based on Audi’s upcoming A1 minicar, which itself will be based on a modified Polo platform. The car will measure approximately 3.95m in length and will feature a coupe-styled body. Both two and four-door versions are expected to be released.

Power will come from a 1.4L TFSI four-cylinder engine producing 125hp (93kW) or a TSI unit with 150hp (112kW). Diesel fans will be able to pick from a 1.2L TDI with 80hp (60kW) or a 1.6L TDI with 120hp (90kW).

All new Photos of 2010 Nissan GT-R SpecV

Nissan earlier this month revealed details for its new limited-production GT-R SpecV model, which goes on sale in Japan early in February and is expected to arrive in the U.S. later this year. The SpecV is targeted specifically at enthusiast drivers who desire race car-level performance in a street-legal vehicle. Today I have live photos of the car taken at a dealership in Nagoya, Japan.

Based on the new ‘Series II’ GT-R, the SpecV model includes unique body, interior and performance equipment and modifications, raising the already potent supercar’s performance to even higher levels.

The SpecV's new exterior features include a carbon-fiber rear spoiler, a carbon-fiber grille, and carbon-fiber brake ducts. The special edition is also available with an exclusive ‘Ultimate Black Opal’ paint scheme – a unique purplish black, found on the car in the live photos below. Inside, the car comes with only the two front seats, which themselves are special Recaro carbon-fiber buckets. More carbon-fiber is used for the rear center storage box, instrument panel and other trim areas.

Performance is enhanced with a new high gear boost control device, which momentarily increases boost of the engine's twin turbochargers for greater torque in the intermediate-to-high speed ranges to provide a more powerful feeling of acceleration, while also allowing the engine to operate at a lower speed for improved fuel economy. Other modifications include a titanium-coated exhaust system and carbon-ceramic brakes that provide powerful stopping performance.

Nissan is yet to reveal official power figures but output is expected to be similar to the 478hp (356kW) level offered in the standard Series II model.

Instead, Nissan engineers have focused on handling performance, equipping the car with lightweight, racing-style forged aluminum wheels developed by Nismo. The lighter unsprung weight provided by the new wheels, together with the enhanced braking capability, an exclusive suspension and high-grip tires, combine to deliver improved race-track performance.

The new SpecV officially made its world debut at the recent Tokyo Auto Salon. Pricing will start at ¥15,750,000 in Japan, which is roughly double the price of the standard model.

Pagani releases full details for new Zonda R

The Pagani Zonda and its several variants are already among the most dramatically styled and exclusive supercars in the world, but founder Horacio Pagani has more ambitious plans for the car in the form of the Zonda R. First previewed in late 2007, Pagani has now released full details for the car, which made its world debut this week at a small event in Vienna.

Powered by a very hot variant of the 7.3L AMG V12 engine that underpins several other Zondas, the R model is an exercise in extremes - extreme design, extreme materials and extreme performance. Though the car has yet to take to the track in anger - at least publicly - its heavier, less powerful Zonda F stablemate already set a scorching Nurburgring lap time of 7:27.82.

However, while the Zonda F was designed from the start as a road car, the all-new Zonda R was designed with one intention in mind – ultimate performance at the racetrack without any implications of rules, except for safety, where no compromise is allowed.

In September 2006 the first drawings were ready, but it was crucial to have the support of Mercedes-AMG for a high revving engine with a power output of 750hp (560kW), dry sump lubrication, low weight and a low centre of gravity. Peak torque is rated at a healthy 524lb-ft (710Nm). New modifications to the engine include a carbon-fiber high-flow intake, a racing multiple disc sintered clutch, and an F1-style exhaust system.

The Zonda R is a car designed from scratch, with only 10% of the Zonda F components to be carried over. Specifications include forged suspension, a newly designed six speed transversal sequential gearbox, a full carbon-fiber monocoque body, and an aeronautical four pump fuel tank.

The wheelbase has grown by 47mm, the overall length by 394mm and the track is increased by 50mm. The bodywork and aerodynamics have been modified to offer maximum downforce. Other features include magnesium forged rims with a central wheel nut and a quick pneumatic lifting system.

The new bodywork has been honed to offer elevated downforce even in low speed corners. The longer front bonnet with flaps, closed underbody and the rear overhang with the adjustable rear wing and race derived diffuser all work to improve aerodynamics.

Pagani is yet to reveal production and pricing details but previous suggested it may retail at upwards of €1.2 million.

Hamann Tycoon BMW X6 widebody kit

Late in 2008 Hamann revealed its plans for the BMW X6, including a range of performance and appearance upgrades. Today the tuning house expands that range with a new Tycoon widebody kit for the 'sports activity coupe'.

Building on the foundation of Hamann's earlier X6 modificaitions, including power upgrades to the xDrive30d and xDrive35d diesel engines as well as the big and powerful xDrive50i petrol V8. Rated at 261hp (195kW) and 315hp (235kW) for the diesel models, respectively, Hamann has not yet disclosed the power upgrade for the xDrive50i, though building on the already-potent 400hp (298kW) twin-turbo V8 ensures it will be a beast.

The key new upgrades for the Tycoon variant, however, relate to the widebody kit, which extends the car's horizontal width by 2.36in (60mm). That extra width comes via wider fender flares, and an updated front fascia and side skirt kit help accentuate the new, wide stance. LED daytime running lights also add a unique touch, while the rear of the vehicle gets a new diffuser and roof spoiler.

Alloy wheels in 23in 'XXL format' fills the gaping arches to the brim, and the wide lip further emphasizes the widebody design. A 40mm lowering kit, wide low-profile tires and reworked suspension ensure the big vehicle makes good use of the new-found width and stability.

Audi’s next-generation A8

The current Audi A8 has been on sale since 2003 and since that time has only received a minor facelift to keep it fresh alongside the Mercedes Benz S-Class, Lexus LS and recently revealed BMW 7-series. The minor styling changes implemented during the recent facelift will have to soldier on for a few more years as the next-generation ‘D4’ A8, according to latest reports, is expected to arrive in the second half of this year, following a debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

A prototype for the car has already been spotted undergoing cold weather testing, hidden beneath the current D3 body. Tell-tale signs that the prototype was the next-generation model included extended fender flares, a stretched wheelbase and wider track.

As the rendering suggests, the design of the new model will be an evolution of the current car. The aluminum spaceframe body will carry over, saving engineers more than 150kg compared with a conventional steel body. The car’s final curb weight is expected to range from between 3,630lb (1,650kg) and 4,180lb (1,900kg) depending on the model specification. The newest rendering diverges somewhat from earlier previews of the car with new slotted lower air intakes in the front air dam and redesigned LED-edged headlights.

Distinguishing features will be a large single-frame grille, LED daytime running lights and a coupe-like profile. Speaking with Car and Driver, Audi's chief designer Stefan Sielaff explains: "The first generation was very dogmatic and product-design-like. With the second generation, the theme was 'elegance'—softer, flowing lines. The upcoming third generation will be stronger, sharper, and more precise."

Sielaff also revealed that the new A8 will be “the first of a new styling language at Audi”. In 2008 Audi released several teaser sketches of its future product lineup, including the new D4 A8.

Under the new sheet metal will be an extended version of the modular platform used in the A4, but expect to see more exotic materials such as aluminum and magnesium employed to help save further weight and improve dynamics. The base model will remain FWD but AWD variants will feature the latest quattro torque vectoring SportDifferential, which distributes drive individually between each axle and between the rear wheels for improved traction and stability. There will also be electronic control for the air-suspension, steering, pedal response and transmission systems.

The new engine lineup will feature a 250hp (186kW) 3.0L V6 TDI, a 290hp (216kW) 3.0L V6 FSI, a 340hp (253kW) 4.2L V8 TDI, a 372hp (277kW) 4.2L V8 FSI and finally a 620hp (462kW) 5.0L V10 FSI reserved for the S8. Audi is yet to decide on whether it will launch a 12-cylinder model, however there are plans for a new mild-hybrid version. There will also be more supercharged units as well as increased application of Audi’s latest valve-lift system. The 6.0L W12 engine is reportedly being phased out due to its high costs and emissions.

2009 will be very busy for Audi as the carmaker is not only launching the new A8 but also the V10-powered version of the R8, the new TT-RS, the A5/S5 Cabrio, A5 Sportback, A4 Allroad, the S4, and a Q7 facelift. The long-wheelbase version of the A8 will arrive in mid-2010.

Preview: 2010 BMW X1 SUV

The next couple of years will be very busy for BMW as it launches a handful of new models including new versions of current top sellers and some models we’ve never seen before. The new X1, revealed in these new computer generated renderings and spy shots taken last year, falls into the latter category, taking the carmaker into the compact SUV market currently dominated by the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

The newest rendering shows the BMW designers will stick closely to the lines of the Concept X1 showcased at October's Paris Motor Show.

The most recent set of spy images, meanwhile, thoroughly reveal the upcoming X1 - the latest prototypes shedding the heavy camo gear seen on previous test cars in favor of less inhibiting material. We also get a chance to look inside the interior for the first time. The automatic transmission and predominant 'mph' markings on the speedometer suggest this is likely a U.S. spec car being tested. As the renderings show, the X1 will also share a bit of the X6 crossover's updated styling, though avoids the awkward stance and front end of the larger vehicle.

The new X1’s running gear is based on the 1-series compact car but its ride height will be taller and BMW’s X-drive AWD system will also feature.

Engine options will range from a 145hp (108kW) 1.8L four-cylinder petrol engine to a range-topping 3L diesel. Transmissions will include a conventional six-speed manual as well an optional six-speed self shifter. Expect to see elements from the CS concept car make it onto the new X1 including an enlarged grille, wrap around headlights and an aggressive bumper.

Production is expected to top the 100,000 mark and will start at a BMW plant in Leipzig by the middle of next year. The X1 will be priced higher than the 1-series, likely starting close to the $30,000 mark. Much of the car’s components will also be shared with an upcoming SUV model from Mini to save on development costs, although the BMW model is expected to be significantly larger than the Mini.

Japanese tuning house Wald International has a wide range of styling and performance kits for nearly every major luxury car brand on the market, but this time the company has focused its attention on a humble Nissan, albeit one of the fastest Nissans ever produced. The car is the all-new Nissan GT-R, a vehicle whose lines and shape were dictated almost exclusively by the drive for optimal aerodynamics.

Improving on the original design would be a tough task for any tuner, and not surprisingly most of the aftermarket kits we’ve seen thus far, such as the Zele and Arios, appear almost completely stock. Wald’s new kit sets out to change all this by including a full bodykit, new wheels, and plenty of carbon-fiber accessories.

Wald has given the GT-R a new look through a custom carbon-fiber front lip spoiler, a custom nose cover, a carbon-fiber engine cover, a new rear wing, and some low-drag duct covers also made out of lightweight composite.

All of the accessories can be had in a choice of either wet or dry carbon fiber - wet being the glossy-look material most people are accustomed to, and dry carbon fiber being the dull grey material that wins races and goes into space. The price differential between the two is accordingly as huge as the appearance differential: including taxes, the full wet carbon kit is priced at ￥1,039,500 ($11,620), while the dry kit runs ￥2,362,500 ($26,410).

Surprisingly no power-adding modifications were revealed, though with the reported difficulty in tuning the GT-R's engine and the obvious benefits of an extensive carbon-fiber-replacement program, the Wald take on GT-R modification may be one of the most successful.

Radical Sports Cars updates range

Low-volume British carmaker Radical is known for its potent track machines, such as the SR8 roadster, which can lap the Nurburgring in under seven minutes. Despite the current global economic crisis, business has been booming because of the high-performance but low-budget nature of their cars, and now the British company is updating its model range following record sales and a long order list.

The Radical SR8 gets a number of safety and handling updates, including a stiffer chassis and an upgraded steering system. While the standard SR8 uses a 380hp engine, a new 455hp 2.8L Powertec RPB engine will also be available. The complete powerplant weighs just 88kg, and includes a four-pump dry sump system with two oil pressure pumps and integral rotary vane water pump.

Meanwhile, Radical's volume car, the SR3 Supersport, also receives an improved chassis that has been designed to meet FIA standards for sports cars. There has also been a complete aerodynamic re-style for the SR3 Supersport, as well as major safety upgrades and new specification Powertec engines. Based on Radical’s SR9 Le Mans Prototype, the SR3’s new high nose increases downforce, reduces drag and improves cooling for hot climates. The standard SR3 uses a 205hp engine, but a new optional 260hp Powertec Suzuki motor is now available with an improved paddle shift option and low-friction dampers.

The SR5 Endurosport, meanwhile, gets an upgraded Powertec-prepared Honda VTEC engine that is available in three states of tune, from 245bhp up to 295bhp, as well as chassis upgrades, while the SR4 gets a new 150hp option.

Audi expands U.S. A4 range with FWD and manual models

Audi is expanding its 2009 A4 lineup with two new models, one featuring front-wheel drive and one featuring a six-speed manual transmission.

The front-wheel-drive model, known as the 2009 Audi A4 2.0T FrontTrak, will be using the carmaker’s award-winning 2.0L TFSI engine mated to a multitronic continuously variable transmission. The new front-drive entry level model will bring the A4's price down to just $31,000 with the automatic transmission.

The result of the new front-wheel-drive A4 powertrain combination is the best fuel efficiency in its class with an EPA rating of 23mpg in city driving conditions and 30mpg in highway driving. Those fuel economy figures represent a 4% fuel-efficiency gain over the previous-generation A4 powered with earlier versions of the 2.0L TFSI engine and the multitronic transmission.

Additionally the base A4 quattro sedan will now be available with a six-speed manual transmission paired to its 2.0L TFSI engine. The 2009 A4 2.0T quattro manual sedan achieves the best efficiency of any all-wheel drive car in its luxury segment with EPA fuel economy ratings of 22mpg in city driving and 30mpg on highways. The A4 quattro sedan starts at $31,850, and both models are expected to receive a host of standard features such as a sunroof, leather interior and satellite radio systems.

Imola Racing builds widebody Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

As their name suggests, the tuners at Imola Racing specialize in Ferrari modification, and their latest creation demonstrates their art in a particularly dramatic manner. Building on the base of the already excellent Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, Imola adds a widebody kit and a range of performance upgrades via parent company the Dimex Automotive Group.

The widebody kit itself is straightforward enough, offering a wider track and room for more wheel - and sticky rubber - to improve handling. In addition to the wider fenders, the company also adds a new front spoiler, rear diffuser and spoiler and custom wide-lip alloy wheels. Inside, the car can be customized as the buyer desires, but this example features a combination of black and red leather, alcantara and aluminum and carbon fiber trim.

Exact details on performance modifications is still lacking, but a claimed boost to 648hp (483kW) puts the widebody 612 into the realm of the Enzo, which is rated at 651hp (485kW) from the factory. The larger size and weight of the Scaglietti means performance is likely to be somewhat less brutal, but is still a significant improvement over the stock 612's 5.7L V12 rating of 540hp (403kW).

Mercedes-McLaren SLR Stirling Moss revealed

With Mercedes’ next generation of super sports cars currently under development by the carmaker’s racing arm, HWA, as well as its in-house tuner, AMG, the current manufacturing partnership with McLaren is set to end once production of the SLR supercar concludes next year. To mark the occasion, Mercedes and McLaren will release a highly modified SLR that will be produced in a limited run of just 75 cars.

The latest version is called the SLR Stirling Moss and it differs significantly from the current model on which it’s based. The most striking feature is its open-top design, which incorporates a roofless design with no windshield and vertical lifting doors. The design appears similar to the previous C16 Speedster based on the Corvette from Callaway, which was revealed last year. Stirling Moss, incidentally, was a legendary British race car driver who won his first F1 GP in a Mercedes, and was also the driver who won the 1955 Mille Miglia in record time behind the wheel of a 300 SLR.

Power from the car’s supercharged 5.5L V8 engine remains at a heady 650hp (478kW) and propels the open-top racer from 0-100km/h in just 3.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 350km/h – 13km/h faster than the SLR 722 model.

Adding to the performance is a lighter kerb weight, which could be more than 300kg lighter than the standard model. The weight saving will come from increased use of carbon-fiber for the body, new carbon-ceramic brakes and a new exhaust system.

The special edition model will cost exactly €750,000 (before taxes) and it will make its world debut next month at the Detroit Auto Show, where more information, including availability details, will be released.

Revealing shots of the next-gen Mercedes Benz CLS

The Mercedes Benz CLS ignited the four-door coupe market when it was introduced back in 2004, and since then we’ve seen several other luxury rivals attempt to emulate the design with cars like the Porsche Panamera, Audi A7 and Aston Martin Rapide all under development.

Now the first prototype for Mercedes’ next-generation CLS has been spotted, revealing a few subtle clues about the new model (previously we saw a test-mule disguised under the sheet metal of the current model). The new car is expected to be launched in late 2010 as a 2011 model, and positioned more upmarket to bring it in line with some of its more premium rivals. This will also allow Mercedes to introduce a second four-door coupe model, rumored to be based on its next-generation small car platform.

The car will feature a wider track, as indicated by the extended wheel arches seen on the previous test mule, and according to insiders its platform will be borrowed from the current S-Class sedan flagship.

New to the CLS will be a hybrid option based on the same powertrain as the one used in the recently revealed S400 BlueHybrid. Other engine options will include both V6 and V8 powerplants, and there will invariably be a high-performance AMG model.

Meanwhile, the styling of the car is expected to be similar to the current model although it will be bigger overall and feature some sharper lines, especially around the front end. Mercedes may even launch a 'Shooting Brake' variant as well. A Shooting Brake is essentially a two-door wagon, and Mercedes designers hinted at the possibility of a modern version with the unveiling of the ConceptFASCINATION study at the Paris Motor Show. While the ConceptFASCINATION was based around the design of the new E-Class Coupe, which is expected to spawn a Shooting Brake model of its own, our inside source suggests that a new CLS version will be offered as well.

Mansory modifies the Bugatti Veyron

Customized Bugatti Veyrons are almost as common as the cars themselves, which is to say not common at all. But this particular car, modified by Mansory, is less common than even most other custom Veyrons. Little information about the car exists, though there appear to be as many as three examples of this particular styling package.

Eschewing the popular matte-color trend of late, the Mansory Vincero is pure gloss from stem to stern. Largely blacked out, but with a sprinkling of chrome accents in the grille and a dark chrome treatment along the side of the car across the front fenders and door panels, the Vincero certainly lives up to its name. Inside the car gets a typically Mansory two-tone black and white treatment, though the addition of a woven element makes for a unique touch.

An extra dose of naked carbon fiber across the front bonnet and rear engine cover, plus the rear fascia and diffuser gives the Vincero the look of the Sang Noir, which may in fact be the basis for this custom car. Only 15 of the Sang Noir special-editions were built, however, so it's more likely that this car is styled to look somewhat alike.

For those that would like to investigate the matter in person, or just happen to have several million unused dollars lying about, the car is on sale at Prestige Cars in the United Arab Emirates.

Spy shots: Undisguised Aston Martin Rapide

The long awaited four-door Aston Martin Rapide has been spotted, completely undisguised, outside the company's headquarters in Gaydon, England. Previous prototypes were last spotted on the frozen lakes of Sweden for winter testing, and since then Aston Martin has released two official images of the car - albeit computer generated renderings of it.

Inside, the Rapide will be almost identical to the DB9 but will differ thanks to more generous rear seats, headrest mounted LCD monitors, and a panoramic glass sunroof.

Under the hood will likely be a 500hp (373kW) V12 engine in a range-topping model and a less powerful V8 unit in a base version. RWD and a six-speed automatic are likely to be the only drivetrain options.

Unfortunately for purists, the Rapide will not be built at Aston's traditional Gaydon plant in England - production of the four-door has been contracted to Magna Steyr who will build the vehicle at its Austrian plant.

Production is expected to start in 2009 for the Rapide, giving it ample time to get into the market against the upcoming Panamera, although rivals like the CLS and Maserati Quattroporte already have a big head start over the new four-door Porsche and Aston Martin.

VW working on new 'two-liter' microcar

More than a year ago, Volkswagen announced it was working on a project to bring its 1-Liter concept from 2002 to production reality. The three-wheeled low-slung extremely aerodynamic design still seems a bit unrealistic, but now VW is thought to be building a slightly larger, more functional city car that's shooting for the 2L/100km (117.6mpg) fuel efficiency mark.

The new '2-Liter' car is expected to be based on a shorter version of the up! (concept pictured) that will be going into production next year, reports Auto Motor & Sport. Targeting competition like the Smart ForTwo and Toyota's new iQ minicar, the 2-Liter will be a more realistic goal for production, and should come sooner than the 1-Liter, though that tandem-seated hyper-efficient vehicle could enter production as early as 2010.

VW has already hinted that a more utilitarian fuel-focused vehicle might hit the streets in the interim, though at the time in 2007, Volkswagen’s Chairman Ferdinand Piëch framed it as a 3L/100km (78.4mpg) car based around the Lupo.

Like the 1-Liter, the 2-Liter is expected to use diesel as its fuel since it's the most energy-dense of the readily available fuels in use today. A small displacement three-cylinder car, around 1L in size, will likely get the nod. Two-cylinders are in development but unlikely for use due to their high-revving nature in a vehicular application - the rougher, noisier operation doesn't result in any improvements in fuel economy.

Though it's still too early for firm numbers, power output is expected to lie in the 50hp (44kW) range, putting it squarely in the fight with its minicar companions.

European Parliament agrees to looser CO2 rules

n September, a committee in the European Parliament proposed easing the carbon dioxide emissions rules previously set to phase in over the next several years, and today the proposal was approved. The modifications require only 65% of manufacturer fleets to meet the strict 130g/km targets in 2012, raising that figure to 100% by 2015.

When the new rules were proposed several months ago, German industry committee member Werner Langen said, "This is an attempt to find a reasonable compromise between climate policy and the automobile industry's competitiveness." The phase-in process will ratchet up from 65% of the new-car fleet in compliance by 2012 to 75% in 2013 and 80% in 2014, ending at 100% compliance by 2015. Allowing a some room for adjustment based on the weight of the manufacturer's cars gives Fiat a tougher time, having to meet a 122g/km limit by 2015, while Daimler and BMW will only have to get down to 137g/km - still a far cry from today's figures. The end result is a EU-wide fleet that meets the 130g/km limit.

The European Commission's previously proposed legislation would have put the 130g/km average CO2 emissions limit in place for 100% of fleets as of 2012, with varying targets for individual manufacturers. The penalty for exceeding the emissions targets would amount to €95 ($136) for each gram of CO2 above the limit, multiplied by the number of cars sold. According to the industry committee that proposed the newly adopted standard, that should be reduced to €40 (57) per gram.

Despite the softer targets in the new proposal, automotive industry group ACEA has renewed its requests for €40 billion ($57 billion) in funding, reports Automotive News. "We are committed to do what we can to deliver, despite the sudden, dramatic economic downturn that severely limits our resources... We ask for governments to support the strategic auto sector in these extraordinary circumstances," said Christian Streiff, president of the ACEA and CEO of PSA.

The costs of compliance are going to be huge, amounting to about €25 billion ($35.7 billion) annually, according to a study by A.T. Kearney and Credit Suisse. To meet the new targets, automakers will have to reduce emissions by about 3% per year.

Environmental groups are decrying the proposal as the death of the movement, however. "It is questionable whether the agreed climate targets will ever be met given the combination of weak penalties and gigantic loopholes," Greenpeace said of the proposal in September.

Future caps in the new law are estimated to reach 95g/km CO2 emissions by 2020, however, leaving the door open for more haggling between the environmental lobby, industry advocates and the European Commission.

Nissan GT-R COBRA N+ Tuning Concept

The U.S. and Japan have had the Nissan GT-R on the street for the better part of a year already, but Europe continues to wait - the first cars won't be delivered until Q1 2009. But that hasn't stopped the tuners from moving forward with tuning kits for the Japanese supercar killer.

With AWD, an upgraded 478hp (356kW) twin-turbo V6 and improvements honed in the U.S. and Japanese markets, the European model will already be a step above the 'Series I' GT-R. The Germans at the COBRA N+ division of Cobra Technology & Lifestyle have decided to take the car to the next step.

Increasing turbo boost by just 2.2psi (0.15bar), tuning the ECU and adding a pair of sport air filters is enough to secure a 543hp (405kW) and 502lb-ft (680Nm) rating. A full exhaust with high-flow cats and stainless steel tubing is currently under development, and could offer even more power thanks to reduced backpressure.

Handling modifications include a custom set of adjustable coil-overs, three piece 21in COBRA N+ alloy wheels, and 15.9in (405mm) brake discs at the front end.

A fully customized exterior is also part of the package, with functional aero elements worked in to the front air dam and lip spoiler, designed to reduce aerodynamic lift and increase airflow. An upgraded rear diffuser and rear spoiler also aid airflow and downforce, while a custom decal kit pays special attention to the unique lines of the GT-R.

No custom car would be complete without a modified interior, and the COBRA N+ delivers with hand-sewn upholstery of leather and alcantara, carbon fiber race seats and six-point harnesses with a full roll cage.

COBRA N+ is planning to have the kit ready for sale when the GT-R arrives for retail sale in early 2009.

Top ten most polluting vehicles list dominated by supercars

It's a truism that big power requires lots of fuel. There's simply no way around it. So it's not surprising that a newly compiled top 10 list of the world's most polluting passenger cars is composed primarily of supercars. Leading the way is the Bugatti Veyron, rated at a whopping 571g/km CO2.

That's 15% higher than number two on the list, the Lamborghini Murcielago, ticking over at 495g/km CO2 in coupe form, or 500g/km as a roadster. Third through sixth place are much more closely grouped, spanning two Ferraris and the Dodge Viper in addition to one of the only non-supercars on the list: the Bentley Arnage/Azure/Brooklands, rated at 465g/km.

Ferrari's 430 Scuderia and California are downright green by comparison, emitting just 360g/km and 310g/km respectively. Some cars that might make the list - such as SSC's Ultimate Aero - aren't included due to their very small volume production and somewhat lower profiles. Near misses to the list include the Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG (392g/km) and Rolls-Royce Phantom (377g/km).

By way of comparison to some more 'normal' cars, the Nissan 350Z emits 280g/km, BMW's M3 Coupe puts out 285g/km and the Chevrolet Corvette is rated at 316g/km.

HSV caps W427 production at 200 units

When Holden Special Vehicles announced its W427 - essentially a Commodore decked out with a performance suspension and a 505hp (375kW) 7.0L Corvette engine - many declared it a relic, even before it hit the road. Such big-displacement brutishness had no place in a world of green mini-cars and electric power. But HSV continues to disagree, offering 200 examples of the W427 for sale and already planning a successor.

Originally HSV had planned to sell 427 of the cars, one for each of the vehicle's ponderously powerful cubic inches, but to protect exclusivity, and perhaps to meet the soft market, company bosses have cut that number back to less than half. Still, HSV managing director Phil Harding is up-beat about the project, reports Drive.

“Existing W427 customers have told us they want to keep their purchase as exclusive as possible, and some potential customers have asked us for clarification on exactly how many W427 supercars we intend to build. Customers want to be part of an even more exclusive club,” said Harding.

Of the 200 to be built, about 100 have already been sold and another 40 have been ordered. That leaves 60 of the cars to sell before the company closes the order books in June 2009. Priced at AUD$155,000 ($106,000), the W427 is one of the least expensive 500+hp limited-edition super-sedan in the world, making them prime collectibles. Already the company is planning a similar limited-edition car within the next decade, but so far no word on what shape it may take has emerged.

Subaru previews Legacy Concept ahead of Detroit debut

Subaru has released a teaser image for a new concept vehicle previewing the next-generation Legacy (Liberty) sedan due late next year. Appropriately named the Legacy Concept, the vehicle will make its world debut next month at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

The concept will feature a 3.6L horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine and the company’s trademark symmetrical AWD system. Key characteristics include the distinctive front face and flared wheel arches.

The unveiling of the concept also leads up to Subaru’s recognition of 20 years of the Legacy sedan, which the company will be celebrating next year. The Legacy series was first introduced into the world in 1989, and since then factories Gunma, Japan, and Indiana, in the United States, have built more than 3.6 million units.

Subaru is renowned for its love-or-loathe approach to designing cars, as seen in the frequent revisions to its Impreza line over the years, but the styling of the next Legacy isn’t expected to be as controversial.

The new car will build upon the lines of the current model but will feature a more prominent grille, sharper and more angular headlights, flared fenders and a more chiseled overall appearance.

Honda cancels development of V10-powered NSX successor

Amid the announcement of its third profit warning of the year, Honda has confirmed that it has canceled plans for the launch of a successor to the NSX supercar. The new V10-powered model was expected to arrive in the United States next year as an Acura, but sadly all development work on the car has come to an end.

Honda CEO Takeo Fukui confirmed the plan in his end of year speech, saying that all development of the car would cease. Fukui also revealed that plans to introduce the Acura brand to Japan in 2010 have all been canned, reports Automotive News.

The news comes less than two weeks after Honda announced that it planned to pull out of next year’s Formula One season, citing financial constraints as the main reason.

Honda also announced today that it is lowering its annual operating profit forecast by 67% - its third profit warning of the year. The carmaker now expects its operating profit for the business year to March 31 to be ¥180 billion ($2 billion) - down 81% from last year.

Instead, Honda will focus on developing more fuel-efficient hybrid and diesel models, especially in the compact car segments. Plans for a minicar positioned below the Fit (Jazz) are still on track, as are plans for the CR-Z hybrid sports car.

Porsche may not be known for the environmental qualities of its cars, but now the company is hoping to turn this around by proving that its cars can be economical if driven in the right way.

German motoring personality Klaus Niedzwiedz took on a challenge to see just how economical the 345hp (257kW) Porsche 911 Carrera could be if driven correctly. Equipped with Porsche's PDK dual-clutch transmission, Niedzwiedz managed to cover 400 miles (648km) on public roads, achieving a mileage figure of 35mpg (6.7L/100km). In the process, he easily outperformed the combined fuel consumption specified under the Euro 5 standard which, at 24mpg (9.8L/100km) already sets the required benchmark in this category of sports cars in terms of fuel economy.

During the challenge, the Porsche Carrera covered about 118 miles (190km) of the total route on country roads and 19 miles (30km) in city traffic, with the remaining distance on the Autobahn. The car’s tank was filled up prior to and after the test drive by a certified inspector of the German DEKRA Car Inspection Authority who also sealed the fuel tank and the engine compartment in the process. Under normal traffic conditions, with the headlights switched on, and with rain from time to time, the driver sought to keep the car’s engine speed between 1,800 and 2,000 rpm, with a road speed between 56–81mph (90-130km/h). The average speed achieved in the process was 52mph (84km/h).

In the words of test driver Klaus Niedzwiedz, “the result proves that with a lot of feeling and discipline you can even drive a 3.6L, 345hp (257kW) sports car very economically.” The test highlighted the efficacy of Porsche's new fuel-saving technologies, such as direct fuel injection, which improves fuel economy by more than 12%, as well as increasing power and torque. Porsche's dual-clutch transmission also provides significant fuel savings while cutting shift times and providing more performance.

Gumpert boosting Apollo supercar production in ‘09

While it may not have the heritage or sex appeal of traditional supercars, there is no denying that the Gumpert Apollo has struck a chord with many motoring enthusiasts. With its outrageous looks and Ferrari-beating performance, the Gumpert Apollo has been hailed as an impressive piece of engineering from a small German company headed up by a former Audi employee. Now, Gumpert will be upping production of the Apollo, with plans to rollout 25 examples of the vehicle in 2009.

Up until now, just 40 Apollo models have made it out of the factory in three years, but with plans to expand its sales to the lucrative American market, as well as other markets, the 45-man team at Gumpert is getting ready to almost double its yearly output. In the past few months, Gumpert has been able to find people interested in buying its cars in Europe, the Middle East and other areas as well as the United States. The company also says it wants to further expand its distribution network, "mostly towards the East", to markets such as "Russia and the Asian region or Australia", hinting at the likelihood of a right-hand-drive Apollo being produced.

Decked out more like a racing car than a traditional luxury supercar, the Apollo features a tube frame made from chromium molybdenum steel which is also used in the building of aeroplanes, and it already fulfils standard international design specifications from the FIA motor sport authorities, which should make it appealing for those who want to track the car. With eight cylinders, 650hp, 850 Nm and a top speed of over 350km/h, the Apollo promises to challenge even the most skilled drivers.

Gumpert has also created a hybrid racing version of the Apollo with a 3.3L V8 bi-turbo engine and an electric motor providing roughly 100 kW, giving the racer a total output of around 630 hp

Shelby Supercars updates Ultimate Aero supercar with 1,287hp

What is one to do when owning the world's fastest production car just isn't enough? Buy the new year model, of course. Or at least that's the approach at Shelby Supercars (SSC), makers of the twin-turbo Ultimate Aero. The new 2009-model car is already setting its sights on raising the world -record speed set by the previous car to 270mph (434.5km/h).

Though the SSC team claims a 15% gain in horsepower over the old car, according to our calculations the 104hp (78kW) gain over the 1,183hp (882kW) 2008-model car is only about 8%. It's still a very significant 8%, however, putting the Ultimate Aero in a league of its own.

The central change in the Ultimate Aero's powertrain that allowed the increased power is the use of a 1-piece billet aluminum engine block. This improves the strength of the unit, as well as the ability to deliver oil to the key components of the engine, which in turn allows the SSC engineers to turn the turbo boost up even higher.

Redesigned aerodynamics at the front end improve airflow while allowing for a higher top speed. With 20% more air reaching the radiators, cooling of the hyper-performance twin-turbo engine is much improved.

Other new features for the 2009 model include a carbon fiber rear 'AeroBrake' spoiler that deploys when slowing the car, a la the Bugatti Veyron. When the brake pedal is pressed, an actuator pushes the spoiler up an additional 8in, increasing resistance and downforce to shorten stopping distance.

Inside the car gets exposed carbon fiber aplenty, across the dashboard, air vents and doorsills and around the instruments and steering column. A new center console features a digital temperature readout, tire pressure monitor and Azentek PC base 'infotainment' unit.

Mysterious BMW prototype suggests 8-Series is still alive

Spy shots of what appears to be a heavily disguised BMW test mule have ignited rumors that the German company could still be developing a production version of its four-door BMW CS concept car.

Citing the difficult economic climate, BMW last month stated that it would be focusing on smaller cars and that the production CS, likely to be called the 8-Series, was definitely off the table. BMW's chief executive officer, Norbert Reithofer, stated that the business case for the car was not convincing enough for the company to build a range-topping super-sedan and that BMW did not need "that kind of brand shaper." However, these latest spy shots seem to contradict that sentiment.

Anticipation of a bevy of four-door sedans from a number of luxury manufacturers may have been enough to force BMW to reconsider its position. Upcoming models from Aston Martin, Porsche, Mercedes Benz and Lamborghini would mean that BMW would be left out of an entire market segment. If the spy shots are actually what they are rumored to be, then this means that BMW is either willing to take a risk on the CS, or that the business case for the car has changed. Previously it was reported that there was only a 1.3% estimated return on investment for the flagship saloon.

As recently as September, reports of progress on the car's development at BMW's M Division were emerging. Putting development of the car exclusively into the hands of the M Division was intended to help give it the performance credentials it would need to compete with the likes of the Aston Martin Rapide, Porsche Panamera and Mercedes-Benz CLS.

Spy shots: Test-mule for future small Ferrari

A mysterious Ferrari 599 Fiorano GTB has been spotted testing around Germany but a closer look reveals that this is no ordinary 599. A number of ill-fitting panels, a visibly shorter wheelbase, and makeshift exhaust pipes suggest that Ferrari is out testing a new test-mule – but for what car?

The wheelbase of this vehicle makes it about the same size as the recently revealed California, and the front-engine layout means this is not a replacement for the F430 or the Enzo. This has led to speculation that the long-rumored ‘Dino’ Ferrari small car may be back on the table.

Though officials from Ferrari have consistently disputed claims that an affordable Dino would be launched, the current economic climate and changing consumer preferences may have persuaded the higher ups at the Italian company.

Furthermore, Ferrari has long been reported to be considering introducing a new turbocharged V6 engine to help meet upcoming environmental regulations, and a new entry-level model would be the perfect test-bed for gauging its success.

At the same time, Ferrari is also running test-mules for a new mid-engine model most likely the successor to the Enzo supercar. The car is expected to feature a forced-induction V8 powerplant with a large centrally mounted exhaust pipe and an active aerodynamics package.

Danish firm Zenvo Automotive unveils 1,100hp ST1 supercar

The Danes are better known for their stunning architectural and cutting-edge product design, but now a Danish firm has turned its hand to the task of designing a supercar, and the result is the Zenvo ST1. As the first purely Danish supercar, the ST1 sets its aspirations high.

Powered by a turbo/supercharged V8 engine rated at 1,104hp (823kW) and a massive 1,056lb-ft (1,430nm), the car's designers claim 0-62mph (100km/h) acceleration in just 3.0 seconds, an electronically limited top speed of 232mph (375km/h) and a power-to-weight ratio of 802hp/tonne. The impressive performance comes despite RWD-only drive and a six-speed manual transmission as the only option.

Fuel consumption and emissions figures haven't yet been released, but don't expect it to be a green overachiever.

At the front 19x9.5in wheels are wrapped with 255/35 Michelin rubber, while the rears get 20x12.5in wheels and 335/30 shoes to help put all that power to the ground. Despite the huge power and big alloy wheels, the car is surprisingly small, at just 15.3ft (4.66m) long, 6.7ft (2.04m) wide, and 3.9ft (1.19m) tall and weighs just over 3,020lb (1,376kg) thanks to carbon fiber body panels.

Unlike some small-firm supercars, the Zenvo ST1 takes luxurious accommodation as seriously as performance, offering everything from keyless entry to satellite navigation and power telescoping steering wheel as standard equipment. Even the leather-and-alcantara racing seats are electrically adjustable.

No word has yet been released on pricing of the car, but Zenvo has clear series production plans, set to start in 2009. Only 15 of the cars will be built, each assembled by hand, but given the car's dramatic styling and impressive power figures, it's likely to find a niche among the small crowd of supercar buyers.

China’s BYD first to market with mass-produced plug-in hybrid

Chinese manufacturer BYD is planning to have plug-in hybrid vehicles on sale in the U.S. within two years, with similar ambitions for the European market. The company took a step closer to reaching those goals by launching the world’s first mass-produced plug-in hybrid vehicle in China this week.

The car is the F3DM and it can drive up to 62 miles on electrical power alone before a small internal combustion engine takes over driving duties. Its battery can fully charge in nine hours from a regular electrical outlet, or much faster at BYD's own charging stations, reports The Detroit News.

On sale in China priced at 150,000 yuan ($22,000), BYD plans to sell the locally-built plug-in hybrid in the U.S. market by 2010. The move is backed by a $230 million investment from the world's richest man, Warren Buffett, and should help it overcome any development hitches presented by tough U.S. safety laws. The investment came from a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, of which Buffett is the majority shareholder.

According to BYD's exports general manager, the company is "talking to some third-party consulting and engineering companies to get a thorough understanding of the safety standards" in the U.S., which will be integral in the vehicle's success into breaking into the U.S. market.

BYD is predicting that initial sales of the car will top 500 units per month in China and will eventually reach 2,000 sales per month by next year.

Audi reportedly prepping A7 concept for Detroit Auto Show

While many carmakers are either scaling back their 2009 Detroit Auto Show presence, or pulling out altogether, Audi is set to buck the trend with a number of important unveilings reportedly planned for the event. The German luxury marque has already released details about its new V10-powered R8 supercar, and according to a new report a concept version of its upcoming A7 four-door coupe could also make an appearance.

The information comes from a number of Audi insiders who told the Detroit Free Press that the A7 concept will closely mirror the lines of the production model due late next year. Earlier this year Audi released several official teaser sketches of a number of important models including the A7. Unique elements are the extremely short overhangs, reminiscent of the TT Coupe, as well as aggressively tapered headlamps, and a straight roofline that slopes down and blends directly into the rear hatch.

The A7 lineup is expected to start with a 204hp 2.8L model, followed by a 300hp 3.0L supercharged version, and finally a 394hp 4.2L V8 range topper. Eventually an RS7 model will be added to the lineup and this is expected to get a 600hp twin-turbocharged 5.0L V10.

Report: Limited production run planned for GTbyCitroen concept

Citroen, together with the makers of the Sony Playstation game Gran Turismo, created a new GT concept car named the ‘GTbyCitroen’ that went on display at the Paris Motor Show back in October. The concept was developed as part of the promotion for the 5th title in the long-running Gran Turismo racing simulation, but apart from being available as a special car in the game there were no real future plans for it.

According to this report, the dramatically styled concept is rumored to be scheduled for production in an extremely limited run of just 20 cars. The new design director for PSA Peugeot Citroen, Jean-Pierre Ploué, has allegedly indicated that there are production plans for it, although no other details have been reported.

At almost five metres long, the GTbyCitroen features a full race car interior, 21in aluminum wheels, gullwing doors, an adjustable spoiler, and a mid-engine design. While the show car was purely a design study with no working internals, the version in the game features an electric drivetrain powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.

Hennessey unveils Godzilla 700 package for Nissan GT-R

American tuning workshop Hennessey Performance is renowned for its work with the Dodge Viper, but now the firm has reworked the formidable Nissan GT-R - taking it beyond supercar performance and up into the hypercar arena. Starting with the 2009 model-year GT-R, the Texas-based company upgrades power to a lofty 700hp (522kW) - over 225hp (168kW) more than the standard car. Peak torque has also been increased to 630lb-ft (853Nm).

These figures are achieved through a number of upgrades to the GT-R's induction and exhaust systems, including a pair of new turbochargers, an upgraded boost controller, and new intercoolers to complement the blowers. Known as the Godzilla 700, the package is the second major upgrade that Hennessey has performed on the Nissan GT-R. The first set of upgrades increased output to a still impressive 600hp (448kW) and 570lb-ft (772Nm) of torque, and that model was known as the Godzilla 600.

Pricing for the Godzilla 700 kit starts at $18,500, or $24,500 installed, while the Godzilla 600 kit starts at a reasonable $11,500, and $14,500 installed.

Rumors of Hennessey working on a new upgraded GT-R have been around for some time, however no details on the specific outputs or the exact upgrades were available until now. Previously it was thought that Hennessey would rework the new Lexus IS-F performance saloon before the GT-R, but currently it seems as though the Nissan has beaten the Lexus to the punch.

Nevertheless, a Hennessey IS-F is still expected to go ahead, and the planned modification list includes exhaust, headers, and intake upgrades, and possibly a supercharger kit. This should give the IS-F even more potent performance than its 417hp (311kW) already provides.

Report: Four-cylinder EcoBoost to debut in Ford Fusion by 2010

Ford’s new EcoBoost engine technology is heralded by the company as the key to finding a balance between power and economy, but buyers will have to wait more than a year for the first application of the new engine design. EcoBoost will be available towards the middle of next year in the Lincoln MKS sedan and Ford Flex crossover, but the Blue Oval envisages the technology one day appearing across its entire lineup.

EcoBoost technology combines turbocharging and petrol direct injection. In initial testing Ford has found that a V6 with EcoBoost gets as much as 20% better fuel economy than a conventional V8 but with similar power and torque levels.

Ford has already confirmed that the first application of EcoBoost will be a 3.5L V6 engine, but an insider has revealed to the Detroit Free Press that engineers are finalizing development of a 2.0L four-cylinder engine that will likely debut in the facelifted Fusion sedan sometime in 2011.

Ford spokesman Said Deep confirmed that Ford is also developing a four-cylinder version, but said it was "too early to discuss displacements" or what vehicles might get the new engine. Back in October Ford also announced a $110 million investment program at its high-tech Bridgend engine plant in Wales to produce a new range of low-CO2 1.6L four-cylinder petrol engines with EcoBoost, however these are expected to be reserved for Europe.

There has also been talk of Ford developing a new ethanol-injection system that works by injecting a blast of ethanol directly into the cylinder chamber before combustion. The burning of ethanol has the positive side effect of cooling the combustion chambers, and when combined with the higher octane rating of the organic-derived fuel power efficiency can be boosted. The end result of this is diesel-like economy from a petrol engine, however Ford is yet to confirm any plans to implement the technology.

Steve Saleen announces plans for 2010 Mustang Signature Series

The Saleen name is one of the best-known in the Ford tuning world, and despite his recent break with the Saleen, Inc. company he founded in 1983, Steve Saleen's new SMS Supercars project is going strong with a new range of 2010 Mustangs. Dubbed the 2010 Signature Series SMS 460 Mustang, the new cars will feature massive power plus thoroughly upgraded components for handling and appearance to match.

All of the Signature Series Mustangs will be fully certified and street-legal according to SMS, despite offering outputs ranging from 475hp (354kW) to over 650hp (485kW). The basic core inside all of the Signature cars will be the 4.6L V8 that's standard in the 2010 Mustang GT, but with the addition of an SMS custom supercharger.

Exterior modifications include a patented 'SMS Red Butterfly Induction' hood, aerodynamically functional body upgrades and custom wheels. The interior will also get a unique look, and the suspension gets a full complement of SMS 'ultra-high performance' components.

"The 2010 Mustang already has an exciting and sculptural exterior, as well as new, up-scale interior," notes Phil Frank, SMS Chief Creative Officer. "The SMS 460 Mustangs will evolve our design DNA in a more aggressive and aerodynamic direction."

In line with their name, each Signature Series car will be hand-signed by Steve Saleen and adorned with unique badges and graphics to identify the car. Production volume will be restricted on an annual basis, though SMS hasn't yet set a target figure. Orders are now being accepted on the cars, but the first deliveries won't land in customer driveways until at least the second quarter of 2009.

Previously SMS has produced a 2009 Mustang-based Gurney Signature Edition with many of the same performance and appearance mods likely to be implemented on the 2010 model, though as Frank noted, the new cars will feature an 'evolved' design.

Ford announces UK pricing for all-new Focus RS

The super-Focus Americans have been lusting after for years recently received an update to the all-new Focus platform, and now it has been priced for UK consumption. Previous estimates had the Focus RS going on sale in Europe at €39,000 ($53,200), but the official figures released today put the car at a much more palatable £24,995, or about $38,100.

While the UK pricing won't translate directly into every market in Europe, prices on the British Isles are typically roughly comparable to those on the mainland. That makes the Focus RS one of the better hot-hatch deals around, considering the car's 300hp (224kW) and 324lb-ft (440Nm) of torque rating. Acceleration from 0-100km/h (62mph) in 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 264km/h (164mph) bolster its case.

Based around the Focus ST but with upgraded power, handling and appearance, the Focus RS offers one of the most potent three-door FWD platforms available. While many enthusiasts, especially rally fans, would like to see the RS equipped with AWD, Ford argues that the car actually performs better as a FWD platform, due to the negation of the extra weight and complexity of an AWD system. The abundant power is put safely to the ground via the aid of a Quaife LSD, Ford's 'RevoKnuckle' suspension, and an advanced traction control system.

Mercedes releases more info on trio of BlueZERO concepts

Though most of the world associates green with environmentally-friendly technologies, Mercedes and a few others use the color blue to denote their ecologically advanced vehicles and drivetrains. The latest development in the blue-themed line of Mercedes offerings will come at the 2009 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, where a trio of BlueZERO electric vehicle concepts will be shown. Today Mercedes has released even more info about the cars, including specifications.

Only the E-Cell has been revealed in pictures, but there will be three cars under the BlueZERO banner at the Detroit show. The three cars, dubbed E-Cell, F-Cell and E-Cell Plus, all of which offer slightly different takes on the electric vehicle concept, but all feature the same exterior design and overall 13.85ft (4.22m) length.

"The modified sandwich-floor platform provides the perfect basis for a wide model range with electric drive systems. We are also developing a new, additional platform for future compact models with power units based on optimized internal combustion engines. The intelligent networking of both architectures enables us to develop our product portfolio extremely flexibly and efficiently," said Dr. Thomas Weber, Daimler's board member for corporate research and development at Mercedes-Benz Cars. "From 2009, we will be producing the first Mercedes fuel-cell cars on a small scale. Small-scale production of Mercedes-Benz cars with battery-electric drive alone will then commence in 2010. This means we are extremely well equipped for the future."

The E-Cell uses a pure-ev design, with lithium-ion batteries and electric motors doing all of the work. The E-Plus uses lithium-ion batteries and electric motors to drive the wheels, but also features a petrol-powered engine to charge the batteries for greater range between charges. Both the E-Cell and E-Cell Plus can store enough energy for a range of 30 miles within 30 minutes. Finally, the F-Cell uses hydrogen fuel cells to power the electric motors.

Though the BlueZERO name might indicate to the casual observer that the trio is designed as a range of zero-emissions products, only the E-Cell and F-Cell will have zero tailpipe emissions - the E-Cell Plus, like any other plug-in hybrid, will emit standard exhaust when the charging engine is in operation, though at a very low rate of 32g/km CO2. To be fair, both the F-Cell and E-Cell will also involve carbon emissions in the creation of electricity or hydrogen used to power them.

The E-Cell claims a 120mi (200km) range on a one-hour charge or 240mi (400km) on a two-hour charge, while the E-Cell Plus is reportedly good for a range of 370mi (600km) on a tank of fuel and a charge, or 60mi (100km) in electric-only mode, translating to a NEDC fuel consumption of 62 mpg (US 51mpg/4.6L/100km). The E-Cell Plus gets its gasoline-powered miles courtesy of the 67hp (50kW) three-cylinder turbo engine found in the Smart ForTwo. The F-Cell's hydrogen tank holds enough of the fuel for a range of 248mi (400km) from the car's 120hp (90kW) electric motor.

Many steps have been taken to optimize the cars' aerodynamics and overall efficiency, including wheels that minimize wind resistance and tires that reduce rolling resistance. A closed front fascia also minimizes drag, much like that of Chevrolet's Volt plug-in hybrid.

Other high-tech features include the lights at either end of the car. Combining cutting edge lens and LED bulb technologies, the car's lights feature a bright center with slightly diffused edges. Up front, daytime running lights are shaped into a 'C', while at the rear, the taillights form an 'L' shape. Extensive use of Lexan also offers a chance to make many surfaces translucent, such as the rear tailgate, which gives a clear view into the vehicle's interior.

Though all three cars will share the same basic design, a range of three 'ALU-BEAM' metallic colors has been chosen to highlight their differences. The E-Cell, pictured, gets a 'fresh lime green' variant, while the F-Cell gets a mint green exterior and the E-Cell Plus will be colored bright orange.

The design of the E-Cell concept (pictured) is thought to preview the features of the next A-Class and B-Class, and also draws on the design of the 2005 Bionic car concept.

BMW X6 White Shark upgrade package by MCCHIP

BMW's X6 has seemed to many observers - fans and foes alike - to be something of a car without a home. Not quite a sedan, and not quite an SUV, the X6 blends genres in a way that defies description. Now that MCCHIP has had its way with it, however, the X6, at least in 'White Shark' guise, is much closer to being described as a large sport sedan.

Boosting the diesel's power to 340hp (254kW) and 487lb-ft (660Nm) of torque, the White Shark is 46hp (34kW) and 59lb-ft (80Nm) stronger than the standard BMW X6 xDrive35d. The re-flashing also raises the max speed from the factory-limited 148mph (238km/h) to a slightly more brisk 156mph (251km/h).

A significantly lower ride height (40mm up front and 30mm in the back) gives the vehicle a more car-like profile, while the factory 20in wheels have been painted black to offset the bright white exterior. A new grille,

The pricing for the modifications is modest despite the relatively large power gains. The ECU reflash costs just €849 ($1,160) in Germany, while the lowering kit, new black chrome grille and other small exterior tweaks are set at €1,266 ($1,730).

Ford confirms Fiesta for U.S. in early 2010

The Big Three Detroit carmakers are struggling right now, but their plans for the future are still bright, or at least optimistic - perhaps all the more so thanks to the focusing nature of the current crisis. As part of the Blue Oval's future, the Fiesta small car will finally be making its way back to the U.S. as a 2011 model in early 2010, as confirmed by Ford today.

The new Fiesta is already off to a very strong start in Europe and the UK. “In the UK, the Fiesta’s market share for November was the highest since January 1998 for the nameplate, and the new Fiesta attracted 1,000 more retail British buyers than the previous model in November 2007," said Ingvar Sviggum, vice president, marketing, sales and service, Ford of Europe. "This is a promising start for our all-new global model.”

A few weeks ago Ford revealed the key features of the U.S.-spec car via the Fiesta's minisite. A 1.6L four-cylinder with twin independent variable valve timing will offer enough pep for the American palate, while likely planting the Fiesta firmly among the most efficient non-hybrids on offer. The Ford/Microsoft Sync system will be an available option, offering a high degree of technological connectivity - an option which has proven popular on the Focus sedan so far.

Other basics include keyless entry, available 16-inch aluminum wheels, a choice of three different cloth or leather upholstery options, plus a 4" multifunction display, seven airbags and a standard electronic stability control system.

Though the car will be among the smallest four-doors on the market when it comes to America, Ford appears to be positioning the car for a rather premium space in the segment. That will give Ford a chance to clear a better profit margin in the notoriously tough small-car arena, but it could also limit volume somewhat. On the other hand, Honda's Fit, which is positioned similarly within the market, is selling strongly even now.

The buyers that have been attracted to the car so far have been going further up-market than the nameplate's past buyers. According to Ford, about 50% of buyers are choosing the upscale Titanium and Ghia packages, and about half of the vehicles on the road features Bluetooth cell phone connectivity.

Once the current Ford truck line at the Cautitlan, Mexico plant is done retooling for the new minicar, production will start for an expected early 2010 North American debut. The Fiesta is already on sale in Europe, and will be headed to China in 2009.

Canada approves conditional $2.8 billion industry aid plan

Last week looked to be the week that the U.S. would come to an agreement on how to help bail out the auto industry, but the plans and funds evaporated amidst a flurry of political wrangling. In contrast, Canada's lawmakers stayed on track, delivering a conditional CAD$3.5 billion (US$2.8 billion) industry aid package.

The $2.8 billion figure is exactly 20% of the $14 billion that had been proposed by the U.S. House of Representatives. Canada picked that number because it aligns with the production percentage actually carried out in Canada, reports the Detroit Free Press. "What we are signaling here tonight, both the governments of Ontario and Canada, is that we want to be part of the solution as well and it will be commensurate with the production that takes place here in Canada ... about 20%," said Federal Industry Minister Tony Clement.

That 20% falls well short of the $6.8 billion requested by the carmakers, however. Nonetheless, taken in concert with an appropriate package from the U.S. government, the Canadian loans will certainly help.

Canada's loan package remains conditional on the U.S. putting its own together, however. Reasoning on the conditional nature of the Canadian loans is sound - after all, even several billion in loans won't be enough to prop up the U.S. parent companies of the Canadian operations, and if they go bankrupt, so do the Canadian subsidiaries. Without aid from the U.S., any Canadian plan would essentially be throwing the money away.

The White House's potential alternative plan hasn't yet gained any traction, and there doesn't appear to be a seriously viable bill in Congress yet, so it may be another week or more before the U.S. approves any aid, if it chooses to do so at all.

Mazda bringing three 'Circuit Trial' concepts to 2009 Tokyo Auto Show

The biennial Tokyo Auto Salon will feature a number of firsts from Mazda and many other carmakers, including a new range of 'Circuit Trial' track-ready concepts. The Tokyo show will be running in opposition to the similarly-timed Detroit Auto Show, explaining Mazda's absence from the U.S. exhibition.

Mazda's overall theme for the Tokyo show will be the rather ornate 'Driving-oriented environmental technologies for endless driving pleasure'. The Circuit Trial cars, including the RX-8, Demio (Mazda2) and Atenza (Mazda6), will certainly land further toward the 'endless driving pleasure' end of the spectrum.

Only concepts so far, the Circuit Trial cars combine what Mazdaspeed's tuners call "everyday driving comfort" with the right equipment for a fun and fast day at the track. The primary upgrades are M'z Custom (Mazda's Japanese tuning arm) aerodynamic parts, Recaro bucket seats, larger alloy wheels and sticky Yokohama tires.

No other information on the trio of track stars has yet emerged, but the photo of the RX-8 Circuit Trial (pictured) reveals as range of stickers plastered along the side sill, including: Advan, the brand-name of one of Yokohama's highest-performance tire lines; 5Zigen, a prominent aftermarket parts company, known for exhausts and accessories in addition to wheels; Espelir, known primarily for exhaust system elements and coil springs; Endless, a well-known racing brake manufacturer; and Kreuzer Series V, the name of the wheels on the RX-8 Circuit Trial Concept.

Exactly how the balance of parts will play out in the final cars will have to wait until the show, which runs from January 9-11, 2009. Whatever the final configuration, however, it's clear that Mazda is putting together a range of cars with more than superficial modifications.

Sebastien Loeb wins 2008 Race of Champions

Five-time World Rally Championship (WRC) winner Sebastien Loeb won today’s 'Race of Champions', held in London's Wembley Stadium. Loeb managed to beat out a veritable who's who of motorsport drivers to come away with the trophy, including seven-time F1 champion Michael Schumacher.

While Schumacher was taken out early on in the event, Loeb faced a tough battle from F1 driver David Coulthard in the finals. With a best-of-three format for the final, Frenchman Loeb took the honors in the first race to put the pressure on the newly retired F1 driver. Coulthard responded in spectacular fashion, giving the massive British crowd hope of a home victory by piloting to victory in the second heat, driving the KTM X-Bow.

In the end, a nail-biting finish resulted in Loeb taking the honors by just 0.3 seconds, giving him his third Race of Champions victory. Loeb commented after the race that "when you are on the start line, you want to win, but with this event there is not too much pressure. It’s a very tight track and you have to give everything you can." The track that Loeb is referring to is a tight and twisty, temporary tarmac track constructed atop of Wembley’s famous pitch.

Meanwhile Schumacher, the seven-time F1 champion, performed flawlessly in the earlier Nations Cup events to regain the title for Germany, but was knocked out of the first round of the driver’s event after a mistake.

American NASCAR driver Carl Edwards managed to make it to the semifinals of the Race of Champions, and even managed to beat out Schumacher in a head-to-head race. “That was a dream, and that alone was worth the whole trip,” Edwards said.

Kuwaiti firm considering sale of Aston Martin stake

The Kuwaiti-based investment firm that partnered with Prodrive’s David Richards and American banker John Sinders in March 2007 to purchase Aston Martin from Ford was previously reported to be offering its stake in the niche carmaker for an estimated $1 billion. Investment Dar Co. paid roughly $480 million for its 50% share of Aston Martin and the investment firm has now confirmed that it is seriously considering selling up to 20% of the British marque.

The firm is looking at raising close to $1 billion to refinance some of its debts and is willing to sell a portion of its Aston Martin stake on behalf of itself and some of its partners, according to its executive vice-president Amr Abou El-Seoud, who spoke with Reuters.

"We have offers ... we are in talks but the (sale) should be value-added whether financially or technically," he revealed. "It (could) be a maximum 10 to 20% of the company to be taken out of all investors, in other words, Dar's dilution might be in 5 to 10%."

Seoud also mentioned that there is a high chance that a deal will be reached soon, and that further down the track his company maybe even sell shares in Aston Martin to the public.

Like most carmakers, Aston Martin has been hit financially by the global economic crisis and revealed earlier this month that it will be shedding up to a third of its workforce, or about 600 employees. However, Seoud stressed that his firm is not walking away from the carmaker and that there are plans in place to continue developing new models and open new dealerships.

13th International Car of the Year Awards to be presented in Detroit

January's Detroit Auto Show will be playing host to the 13th annual International Car and Truck of the Year awards, and the final nominees for each of the categories have been announced. Competing for the main prize of 'International Car of the Year' are three very different vehicles - the Dodge Challenger, the Ford Flex and the Nissan GT-R. All three cars have been praised by the press for their unique characteristics but only one of them will walk away with the coveted ICOTY prize at the end of the day.

Deciding which car will win is not about comparing performance, or sales or any other quantitative methods. Rather, the judges will examine which car can best "reflect our lifestyles and self image" and project the attitude that "most consumers can identify with."

Meanwhile, there will also be an award for the International Truck of the Year, as well as a new category of awards focused on environmental friendliness called the 'Earth, Wind and Power awards'. Nominees for the truck category include the popular Ford F-150, Chrysler's Dodge Ram and the highly versatile Subaru Forester.

The 'Earth Wind and Power' awards focus on cars that are helping to reduce the damage that automobiles do to the earth, and separate awards will be given out for the best environmentally friendly cars and trucks. In the car category, the nominations consist of three diesel vehicles all developed by German manufacturers: the potent BMW 335d, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI and the Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI. In the truck category, the nominees include BMW's X5 xDrive35d, the Ford Escape Hybrid and the Mercedes Benz ML320 BlueTEC.

Self-lowering speed bumps to benefit slow drivers

A pair of engineers have come up with an innovative way to reduce carbon emissions and encourage drivers to slow down - all by simply reworking the humble speed bump and updating it for the 21st century. Jae-yun Kim and Jong-Su Lee have developed a new speed bump that can vary its height according to the speed that drivers are traveling. The system uses a special damper fitted inside the speedbump that allows the bump to flatten when drivers are travelling at less than 19mph (30km/h). If drivers are travelling greater than this speed, the bump will remain in place, slowing down the speeding driver and causing the car to bounce uncomfortably.

Allowing the bump to flatten at slower speeds reduces carbon emissions by encouraging drivers to accelerate less between the bumps and maintain a slower speed. The system works best when used with a series of speed bumps, such as on long, straight streets. This will help reduce the urge to speed up and slow down excessively in between speed bumps. To ensure that the speed bumps are easily recognised, the designers have also fitted red LEDs around them. This should make them easy to see during the night, as well as the day, and also highlight the fact that they will flatten if drivers slow down.

Currently, the speed bumps are a concept design from Kim and Lee, but with the interest that the innovative design has been receiving from the press, hopefully the duo will be able to find some investors or local governments willing to back their production.

BMW unveils 2010 Z4 Roadster ahead of Detroit Auto Show

BMW has released the first details and images for its all-new Z4 Roadster, which is set to make its debut next month at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show before going on sale in the following months. The design of the new Z4 comes out through classic details interpreted in a very modern style, highlighted by an automated folding aluminum roof.

The hardtop brings the Z4 in line with the competition, opening and closing in 20 seconds. The weight penalty is offset by greater security, better visibility and greater comfort. The side windows are 40% larger than the outgoing soft-top model, and the rear window is fully 52% larger. The Z4 also keeps its classic roadster proportions, with a long hood, short overhangs, and strong shoulders. However, the car's styling has been modernized with new integrated LED indicators on its flanks as well as on the head and tail-lamps.

The new car is slightly larger outside than its predecessor, offering significantly more comfort and storage. The new car is 5.8in longer, 0.4in wider, and 0.3in lower than the outgoing model. The wheelbase has also grown 0.1in to measure 98.8in from axle to axle.

Two powertrains will be available at the car’s North America launch: a 300hp (224kW) twin-turbocharged 3.0L six wearing the new sDrive35i, and a 255hp (190kW) naturally aspirated version of the same engine in the sDrive30i model.

What’s most impressive is the torque characteristics of the turbocharged mill, which maintains its peak levels of 300lb-ft through a broad rev range from 1,400 to 5,000rpm. This allows the car to accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.0 seconds flat and reach an electronically controlled top speed of 150mph when equipped with an optional sport pack. The 0-60mph acceleration time for the sDrive30i, meanwhile, is 5.6 seconds.

While both models are available with a manual six-speed gearbox, the Z4 sDrive35i is available also with a dual-clutch sport automatic transmission featuring seven gears. The six-speed sport automatic is available on the Z4 sDrive30i. Both sport automatic transmissions feature steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

The sport automatic gives the driver the choice of either automatic (Program D) or manual gear selection. If desired, the driver may shift gears manually by means of paddles on the steering wheel. Featuring Dynamic Drive Control as standard, drivers will also be able to choose between three drivetrain and suspension settings at the touch of a button. The Z4 also features an electronic rear brake management system, which is used to simulate a limited slip differential for stronger acceleration in turns.

Opting for the Sport Package with Adaptive M Suspension and Electronic Damping Control allows the driver a number of extra controls. In addition to changing damper forces on the Adaptive M Suspension, DDC also conditions the responses of the gas pedal, the power steering, and the response thresholds of Dynamic Stability Control. This is done by choosing either ‘Normal’, ‘Sport’, or ‘Sport+’ modes.

Both models come as standard on 17in light-alloy wheels with runflat tires and a tire pressure monitoring system.

Once again BMW’s EfficientDynamics technologies serve to provide a balance between performance and fuel efficiency. Some of the highlights include on-demand management and control of the car’s accessory drives, a variable oil pump, intelligent lightweight technology, and optimized aerodynamics.

Inside, the car comes with Kansas leather in a choice of three colors, plus optional Ivory White Nappa leather trim as part of the Exclusive Ivory White Leather Package. The entire range of paintwork colors available on the new Z4 is made up of no less than nine color tones including Orion Silver metallic exclusive to the Roadster.

Also included for the first time in the Roadster is BMW’s latest generation iDrive system, which is now integrated with the navigation system. The system itself is made up of a Controller on the center console and a folding, high-resolution 8.8in display screen on the instrument panel. Pressing the direct selection buttons on the newly configured Controller, the user is able to spontaneously change to the CD, radio, telephone and navigation functions. Navigation data is stored on an 80GB hard drive that has 15GB of storage space available for music.

The new Z4 will be built at BMW’s Regensburg plant in Germany alongside the 3-Series and 1-Series models. This is because the American Spartanburg plant, where the former model was built, is concentrating from now on entirely on the production of BMW’s X models.

Senate rejects auto industry bailout plan

The U.S. Senate rejected an emergency bill to provide billions of dollars of aid to the Detroit 3 carmakers late on Thursday, dashing the hopes of General Motors and Chrysler, both of which may run out of cash by the end of the year.

"We have not been able to get this over the finish line," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said after 10 pm, following day-long negotiations to broker a deal among lawmakers, carmakers, unions and other interest groups.

Earlier this week the White House and Congress reached an agreement on most major points of the planned $14 billion rescue package, with only several final issues left to be decided, and yesterday the Democrat lead House of Representatives passed the bill, voting 237-170 in favor of it. However, the process came to a halt because of a dispute over when UAW workers would consent to have their wages reduced to match those paid to non-union workers in U.S. import-brand factories, reports Automotive News.

"We are three words away" from an agreement, said Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., author of a GOP alternative. He said workers wouldn't accept a 2009 deadline for the parity demand.

The rescue package was aimed at propping up GM and Chrysler through March with low-interest loans, while Ford plans to hold-off taking any loans unless its financial situation worsens. The $14 billion was set to come from a fund previously established by the Energy Department earlier this year aimed at making American cars more fuel efficient.

The plan would have also seen a car czar appointed by the President to oversee restructuring programs and ensure that the carmakers follow through with changes that they have promised to the government in return for the loans. If they refused to follow the directions then further federal loans may be withheld or postponed.

Some options include a repeat vote when Congress comes back early next year with new legislation, or the Bush administration could choose to use some of the $700 billion rescue package, known now as Troubled Assets Relief Program, or TARP, funds, earmarked for financial markets. "Given the current weakened state of the U.S. economy, we will consider other options if necessary -- including use of the TARP program -- to prevent a collapse of troubled automakers," said White House spokeswoman Dana Perino in a written statement.

The U.S. Federal Reserve also has special authority to make emergency loans to almost any economically important entity that can't get credit elsewhere.

Lexus registers LFA trademark with USPTO

Speculation that the Lexus LF-A supercar project had been axed several months ago was refuted to some degree by ongoing testing of the car at the Nurburgring. Now a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has breathed new life into the car's possible production, though the company still hasn''t officially confirmed the car.

The trademark filing, first dug up by AutoSpies, was made December 1, 2008. While information contained in the official document is understandably sparse, the name is registered for use as the name of 'automobiles and structural parts thereof'. Also of note is the absence of the hyphen previously found in the car's name, changing the name from LF-A to LFA.

Test versions of the car spotted in testing are believed to house a 5.0L V10 engine rated at 500hp (373kW). A company executive speaking earlier this year revealed that the car's price, if it did head to production, would "begin with a two." That puts the LFA in league with the Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Gallardo and similar exotics.

A roadster version could also be in the works, previewed by a concept version at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show.

British team completes first shake-down test for record breaking steam car

After eight years of development, the British Steam Car Team are now just months away from attempting to break the world speed record for a steam-powered car – a record that has stood since 1906. The speed to beat is 127.659mph (205km/h) and organizers are comfortable of reaching a new top speed of 200mph (322km/h).

The team rolled out the car for the first time last week, completing several low-speed runs before attempting one high-speed attempt. Organizers now hope to make their first record attempt early next year and are in talks with officials at Edwards Air Force Base in California to use a local dry lake bed. Of given the go-ahead, the Southern California Timing Association will be on hand to marshal the event.

The layout of the steam car shares many characteristics with regular production vehicles. It’s a rear wheel powered, rear engine vehicle that has a traditional rack and pinion front wheel steering system. The braking system consists of four wheel discs (parachute assisted) and there is double wishbone independent suspension at all four corners.

Power comes from a two stage steam turbine fed by a boiler running on LPG and developing a peal of 360hp (268kW). The 13in diameter turbine drives an epicyclical gear train with a 4:1 ratio for a wheel speed of 3,000rpm at 200mph. The boiler section is in the center of the car directly behind the single seat cockpit. For space reasons, there are actually four separate boilers each capable of being run independently.

StudioTorino converts Mercedes SL into Coupetorino concept

What do you get when you combine German engineering with Italian design? One example is the stunning Coupetorino, a re-design project by Alfredo Stola of StudioTorino. Based around the Mercedes SL, the Coupetorino takes a solid platform and turns it into a work of art.

Submitted as a proposal to the 2008 Turin World Design Capital competition, the Coupetorino is, as yet, only a computer rendering and a 1/4 scale model. Converting a native-born convertible into a true coupe is no small task, but the StudioTorino team has full confidence in the computer design of the project coming to life. The end goal was to create a stunning coach-built car with the reliability and comfort of a modern production car.

Mercedes has of course already turned the SL into a coupe for its SL65 AMG Black Series supercar, but its high price, massive power, carbon-fiber dominant construction and sheer rarity put it well beyond the reach of most people, not to mention out of the realm of the production car.

The car, revealed today at the Turin Gallery's premiere, will be on display as part of an exhibit entitled 'Bespoke Coachwork'. To see more of StudioTorino's handiwork, check out the Maserati Cinqueporte concept, or the Porsche Cayman RK.

700hp Lightning GT EV on track for 2010 launch

Following its debut at the London Motor Show earlier this year, Britain's answer to the Tesla Roadster, the Lightning GT electric sports car, is expected to move to the next stage of development in 2009. The team behind the Lightning GT has announced that they will be producing two prototypes by the second quarter of 2009, with a view to start the first customer deliveries in early 2010.

Information at this point is scarce, and currently the car's exact specifications have not yet been finalized. Meanwhile, the company behind the project is still seeking capital from investors and an exact location for production is also still uncertain, which all means that the promised delivery date may need to be pushed back.

Some of the details we know about include a 700hp (522kW) electric powertrain featuring nano-titanate battery technology, which is enough to propel the car from 0-60mph in a flat four seconds and take it a top speed of about 130mph.

The electric drive system, dubbed Hi-Pa Drive, packs four permanent magnet brushless motors with one in each wheel. The system also allows for full traction control and regenerative braking on all four wheels independently. Due to power being developed separately in each wheel, there are no gearboxes, differentials, axles, drive shafts or propshafts in the Lightning sports car.

One of the key benefits of electric vehicles is that they have maximum available power at the wheels at any speed, unlike a petrol engine where maximum power is only obtained high up in the rev range. Officials claim charging the batteries for just ten minutes will provide up to 250 miles of driving, and at current prices driving one mile will cost just 2.5 cents.

To save weight, the car’s body is made from carbon fibre and Kevlar, and even with the full array of batteries on board the GT has a near ideal weight distribution of 48/52 front to rear. The car is also available with luxury items such as air-conditioning, satnav, and full leather trim.

Second official image of production Aston Martin Rapide leaks

Late last month Aston Martin released the first official image of its upcoming Rapide four-door coupe, and like the previously revealed One-77 supercar the first image was a computer generated teaser that only revealed a few details. The second image, leaked today, is essentially the same, but shows the car from the rear, with a clear shot at the glass roof.

The first picture showed that the production version will lose the tiny side air intakes on the front bumper that were first shown on the concept version, while the sides pick up a new shunt line that runs almost the entire length of the body. Originating with the 4WheelsNews site, the second picture reveals the rear of the car features what appear to be LED tail lights, dual exhaust tips and a boat-tail type rear decklid spoiler.

According to CAR, where the first image was sourced, the rear of the production Rapide also sports a slightly different bumper and bootlid to the original concept, as well as some unique chrome detailing.

Inside, the Rapide will be almost identical to the DB9 but will differ thanks to more generous rear seats, headrest mounted LCD monitors, and a panoramic glass sunroof.

Under the hood will likely be a 500hp (373kW) V12 engine in a range-topping model and a less powerful V8 unit in a base version. RWD and a six-speed automatic are likely to be the only drivetrain options.

Unfortunately for purists, the Rapide will not be built at Aston's traditional Gaydon plant in England - production of the four-door has been contracted to Magna Steyr who will build the vehicle at its Austrian plant.

Production is expected to start in 2009 for the Rapide, giving it ample time to get into the market against the upcoming Panamera, although rivals like the CLS and Maserati Quattroporte already have a big head start over the new four-door Porsche and Aston Martin.

Rinspeed unveils iChange Concept

Best known for its construction of oddball but impressive concepts like the sQuba, a James Bond-esque underwater Lotus, Rinspeed is now delving into the design of electric vehicles with its svelte iChange design concept.

The iChange, powered by a 174hp (130kW) electric motor, features a '1-2-3 seater' layout. What does that mean? The body structure is adaptive via an 'electronic trick-tail', which adjusts the car's dimensions based on the passenger load required. With only the driver on board, the car adopts a streamlined tear-drop shape, and as more passengers join, the car's rear section rises to make room.

Frank M. Rinderknecht, the proprietor of Rinspeed, said, "“Thinking about variability and the constantly changing energy demand, we have created an extremely flexible vehicle.” The goal was to optimize weight and aerodynamic drag to get the most out of the electronic vehicle's performance and range. The car, though still just a concept, bears the seed of future development, thinks Rinderknecht, and represents an avenue for real change.

“If we want to preserve our individual mobility in the future, we have to re-think our conception of cars - above all we need to accommodate the ecological aspects,” he said.

Aston Martin offers performance upgrades for previous 4.3L V8 Vantage

Following the launch of the updated Aston Martin 4.7L V8 Vantage earlier this year, owners of the original 4.3L model are now afforded the choice of a retro-fitted power upgrade plus a special ‘Sports Pack’ option previously limited to the updated model. With the addition of the power upgrade, peak power is raised by 20hp (15kW) to 400hp (300kW) and torque is increased by 7.3lb-ft (10Nm) to 310lb-ft (420Nm), increasing top speed to 177mph and delivering a slight improvement in the 0-60mph time.

Developed by the Aston Martin engineering team, the power upgrade is realized through a revised induction system using technology previously introduced on the DBS supercar. The induction system has a pair of switching airbox-valves that open at 5,500rpm allowing additional air into the engine producing more power in a controlled manner. The engine’s control unit has also been reprogrammed with new software to optimize ignition timing. In addition, the new calibration allows the engine to recognize higher octane fuels, further maximizing performance.

Meanwhile, the Sports Pack is comprised of uprated springs and Bilstein dampers, which contributes to a superior dynamic response. Lightweight forged aluminum five-spoke wheels help to reduce the unsprung mass further augmenting the precision handling of the V8 Vantage.

GM studying plug-in hybrid recharging infrastructure

General Motors and Spanish energy company Iberdrola have joined forces to determine what is needed in terms of infrastructure to implement a mass embrace of plug-in electric vehicles in the European market. The study will examine how cars will be recharged, and the effect this will have on marketing them to consumers, as well as determining their large-scale viability. The study underlines GM’s desire to expand its plug-in hybrid program into Europe, as the upcoming Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid is destined to be sold on both sides of the Atlantic.

The study will take place in Spain and the UK, and reportedly will focus on issues such as the location requirements for plug-in sockets in private and public areas, parking systems, and installing electricity meters. The study, if successful, will see GM and Iberdrola work with a number of different European governments to implement recommendations and changes to facilitate a large scale roll out of plug-in electric vehicles.

While the study is being conducted by two private companies, any changes implemented should be beneficial to all major car manufacturers rolling out plug-in electric vehicles. Currently, GM's Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid is the company's last ditch effort to strike a chord with the environmentally conscious buying public, and other companies such as Toyota, Mitsubishi, Fisker and even Chinese companies such as BYD are all developing similar vehicles.

One expert for the Electric Power Research Insititute (EPRI) stated last month that most Western electricity grids can already handle the load if there is a 60% adoption rate of plug-in vehicles by 2050. This adoption rate is reportedly on the higher side of estimates, which should give the public even more confidence in the grid.

Once the Volt has been successfully launched and consumers adhere to the technology, GM plans to launch several other plug-in hybrid vehicles based on the same E-Flex technology underpinning the Volt. Expect to see models launched under the Opel brand and possibly even Cadillac.

The X1 is - or was - a truly inspiring EV. With 0-60mph (96km/h) times of just 3.07 seconds, 0-100mph (160km/h) in 6.87 seconds, 0-100-0 in 11.2 seconds, 170mpg equivalent and lateral g-rating of 1.2, the car was every bit the equal of its combustion-engined counterpart, and a supercar, at least in terms of performance, in its own right.

A return to cheap oil on top of the weak car market have driven the super-fast EV car into oblivion, though the company won't completely fade away, reports CNN. Ian Wright, the man behind the X1, has decided to instead move forward with production of electric powertrains, including the batteries, software and other hardware that can be used by electric vehicle companies in their own ventures.

Israeli firm developing electricity-generating roads

A group of Israeli engineers have created a system that allows certain types of roads to generate electricity just by driving over them. The Israeli engineers behind the project claim that a 1km stretch of the power-generating asphalt will generate 400kW - enough power to run eight small cars.

The system works by embedding tiny piezoelectric crystals into the road. When cars drive over the crystals, they are 'squeezed' and thus generate a small electrical charge. The new 'electric road' will be tested next month when engineers in Israel drive over a stretch of tarmac embedded with the tiny piezoelectric crystals.

Reiter Engineering unveils road-going Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT

Shown at the Essen Motor Show, the road-going Murcielago R-GT features a number of modifications including a new carbon-fiber front spoiler, a new rear diffuser and a prominent spoiler at the rear. One of the most obvious modifications, however, is at the rear where Reiter Engineering has moved the Lamborghini dual-exhaust to the top of the rear in line with the brake lights. This produces a strange look that may not appeal to everyone but certainly marks out the Murcielago R-GT as not your standard Lamborghini. To top it all off, a set of lightweight, black, O.Z. racing wheels also come with the show car.

The proper racing variant of the Murcielago R-GT is developed by Audi Sport together with Reiter Engineering, and usually keeps the standard Murcielago V12 engine with air restrictors in place.

Mercedes to debut 'Splitview' technology in facelifted S-Class

Mercedes Benz today announced the availability of a new display technology that allows driver and passenger to see two totally separate programs from the same screen, at the same time. The equipment will debut on the facelifted S-Class, Mercedes' perennial platform for innovation, in the first half of 2009.

The technology that underpins the Mercedes-Benz Splitview technology has been around for several years now, but practical applications have been lacking until recently. The same basic premise, dubbed 'DualView' was previewed in February by Blaupunkt and Bosch, the system's co-developers.

Pricing for the system has not yet been announced, but the 8in display promises full integration with the COMAND information system as well as offering DVD and TV entertainment to the passenger. At the same time, the driver can use the display for navigation or other information display purposes.

Touchscreen functionality applies only to the driver's view of the screen, however, with the passenger's view controlled by a separate remote. To keep the passenger's entertainment from distracting the driver, the audio output can even be routed through headphones while still allowing regular function of the rest of the car's systems.

Paint companies have a somewhat understandable fascination with color popularity, and each year they release their statistics, citing which new car color reigns supreme. This year, DuPont has named white its strongest seller, though just a few months ago PPG said silver was the hottest color.

The earlier PPG report did remark on the rise in popularity of white and its chromatic nemesis, black. DuPont found white, together with its near-twin white pearl, accounted for 20% of the cars covered with its paint, marking the second year that white outranked silver, which scored 17% this year, tied with black. PPG's results had silver at 20% with white at 18% and black at 17% - all very close to DuPont's numbers, and together the two companies' results paint a clearer picture of the overall market.

White, black and silver are all very nearly equally popular, and it's easy to understand why. The colors are never controversial, can be quite attractive while remaining reserved, and are likely to appeal to a wide range of buyers, unlike more polarizing colors.

Other colors, such as blue, are gaining market share, especially in North America, but multi-color or tonal effects are also growing in popularity.
"We're seeing basic colors like black, white and silver continuing in the lead but consumers are looking for differentiation with tri-coat and other effects," said Karen Surcina, DuPont's color marketing manager for performance coatings. "These colors and effects provide a higher degree of customization and luxury-effect which allow consumers a conservative differentiation from the traditional color palette."

In the rest of the world, DuPont's finding the same basic colors, especially white and silver, at the forefront of sales. Asia in particular is enamored of silver cars,w ith 32% of Chinese and 50% of South Koreans choosing the color. White is most popular in India at 28%, though silver also claimed 27%, together accounting for more than half the country's cars.

Longer-term trends show a decrease in silver cars and an increase in the others in almost all regions, according to DuPont's color designer for North America, Nancy Lockhart. "Moving forward, it will be imperative to refresh styling of these popular colors with different effects that can restore their popularity."

Facelifted Mazda MX-5 makes Japanese debut

Following a number of leaks of images and details, Mazda finally released official information for its facelifted MX-5 (Miata) range in October, when the car made its world debut at the Paris Motor Show. For the facelift, both the exterior and interior has been given a revamp, as has the car’s engine lineup, which now has a 500rpm higher rev limit. Today Mazda released the car, known in its home market as the Roadster, for sale in Japan, the first market to get the updated car.

The 2010 model lineup can be distinguished by a new front-end design, revised side sills, and a new rear bumper. The character hump in the hood remains, as does the fender flares that give the barest of nods to the RX8’s design. A tweaked mesh grille is also more reminiscent of the Mazdaspeed3 (MPS) than previous designs, as is the new lower intake. Inside, the car's design is very much like the current model's with only minor stylistic updates such as the dark silver trim, new instrument panel, and new Recaro seats on select models.

The car is also available with newly designed 16in and 17in aluminum wheels. The 16in wheels have five sets of twin spokes, while the 17in wheels have 10 twisted spokes. New exterior color options include Aluminum, Metropolitan Grey and Sunflower Yellow.

Changes to the car’s powerplant range include the introduction of a forged crankshaft, fully floating pistons and newly designed valve springs. The rev limit for the 2.0L manual model now registers at 7,500rpm, with peak output of 160hp (118kW) 188Nm coming at 7,000rpm. The six-speed manual gearbox has also been upgraded with new carbon-coated synchronizer for improved shift-feel.

A lower front roll center and retuned suspension make the car’s response to steering inputs more linear and enable the driver to precisely trace desired lines. A key refinement was made to the front suspension knuckles. The ball joints’ vertical pivot position was changed to reduce the height of the front roll center by 26mm. This decreased fluctuations in the vertical loading on the outer wheel during cornering maneuvres.

The new range will go on sale in Europe in the first half of next year and is expected to arrive in North America shortly after for the 2010 model year

Ferrari responds to rumors of financial trouble: 'we're fine'

The Italian automaker today rebutted media reports of its financial instability, insisting that not only is the company operating within expected parameters, but that everything is fine in terms of sales despite the global slowdown.

A report yesterday by Autocar claimed an inside source revealed Ferrari would be cutting up to 300 jobs by weeks end as part of a drastic cost-savings measure to keep the company afloat.

Today's statement from Ferrari, by way of MotorTrend, reveals that that is - at least for the moment - patently false. No such announcement has been made, and though a contractual analysis is ongoing within the company, the reaction by leadership to the erroneous reports serves as an indicator that no such firings will take place.

Sales at the company are somewhat slower than last year, but 2007 was a strong year for the company, and 2008 has been universally bad for the car business as a whole. Coming up about 120 vehicles short of 2007's year-to-date tally with 1,482 vehicles sold in 2008 puts sales down about 7.5% - pretty good, all things considered. Ferrari says that F430 sales in particular are going well, though spider models are understandably slow as the Northern Hemisphere heads into winter.

Finally, the planned production holiday is within normal ranges, with the company claiming it's simply taking advantage of the proximity of the weekend to the holidays this year. The extra time off isn't related to an overflow of unsold stock, says the Ferrari source.

The recent reveal of the California convertible hardtop and the Scuderia Spider 16M offer somewhat independent indicators that as recently as last month Ferrari was confident enough in its current position to launch two brand new models - something most brands elect to delay during hard times.

European launch for Chevrolet Cruze on track for April 2009

While General Motors’ financial strife may be putting many of its development plans on the back burner for now, a statement from Chevrolet's European Executive Director confirms that the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze will remain on schedule for its debut in the European market in just a few months.

Expected to debut in Europe in April, the new Cruze is expected to sell in numbers of up around 20,000 to 25,000 in its first year. While sales are important for the midsized Cruze, even more important is turning the considerable European market on to the Chevrolet brand as a whole, and to help it to achieve the success that Ford has had there. Ford's small economical cars have proven a hit in Europe and despite the global financial meltdown Ford of Europe is expected to be profitable both this year and next year, reports Automotive News.

Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Cruze has already been launched in South Korea but still has a long wait until it sees the shores of North America. The car was scheduled to go on sale in North America by mid 2010 as a replacement for the Chevrolet Cobalt, however sources at GM are citing the company's current cash struggles as a factor that will end up delaying it until 2011 at the earliest.

The European market Cruze will be built in GM's Daewoo center in South Korea and then exported to the European market, while the North American and Russian models will be built locally.

Ward’s Auto reveals '10 Best Engines' list for 2009

One of the events mainstays for the past 15 years, the Ward’s Auto 10 Best Engines awards, has once again been announced. The list, which is the North American auto industry’s only award for powertrains, is selected by Ward’s editors, who for this year’s round-up were looking for both efficiency and fun-factor.

To qualify for the award, engines must be available in a regular-production, U.S.-specification models and be on sale no later than the first quarter of 2009. The catch is that the cars must be priced no more than $54,000 - a price cap indexed to the average cost of a new vehicle. The awards are set to be formally announced on January 14 at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Surprisingly, Nissan’s familiar VQ series V6 engine was absent from the list for the first time since the award’s inception back in 1995 despite being significantly updated this past year. Also, a marked change from last year’s list was the inclusion of more diesel and four-cylinder engines, which highlights the gravity of changing preferences towards smaller and more fuel-efficient powertrains in the American car market.
